Oriental Poppies

Does anyone know if oriental poppies are self pollinating? I have a few different varieties and want the seed to stay pure so I was thinking of bagging a few flowerheads and shaking them.

What a wonderful site! So much information, so little time. I'm a 74 year-old recently retired widow with a million questions. Gardening is new to me, and I'm getting worlds of pleasure doing it. Can you imagine, though, that I can't even figure out which zone I'm in?

I live in Southern California, specifically Orange County, which is between Los Angeles and San Diego. I'm 6-10 miles north of the ocean. Some articles seem to put me in zone 24, others don't even reference a zone that high. I'm totally confused. Are zones uniform regardless of which magazine, which plant, which gardener is offering advice. For example, if I'm in Zone 10 for one plant am I in Zone 10 for every plant?

I've been reading here about the Encore Azaleas, and I'm super excited to buy a couple but need to get this zone thing straight first.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Your zone denotes the coldest expected temps in winter, and plants are assigned hardiness ratings based on the zones. I'm in zone 4, so I can usually grow things with a hardiness of 4 and up. That being said, Some winters are less harsh, and you can have microclimates in your yard where the winter temps can be much colder or much warmer. I have a yellow house that faces south, and I've been able to pull a zone 6 plant survival sometimes. Snow cover also helps immensely!

I meant to also ask Threegardeners, do you have different cultivars? It's mainly because I have one "Royal Wedding" and I've traded out all my seed and would like to collect more. But I also have orange and Brilliant Red, and I was worried about them cross pollinating. But then again, my orange set seed, and there isn't another poppy plant for miles, so I 'spose they can self pollinate...

every year they come back bigger and better than ever!
