PLEASE! WE NEED YOUR INPUT FOR ROUNDUP PLANNING!!! HELP!!!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

One thing to consider might be a "my favourites" theme, but without the required plant list.
More useful as a method to show what you love the best, without the competition aspect.

If a list is mandatory, the plants on it should be those which are peaking at the end of August. Some annuals will have declined by that time, so folks should keep that in mind.

Sorry I didn't get this posted over the weekend. Spent ALL of my time in the yard trying to get a bit caught up.

There are so many thoughts on how the "pot" contest should go that, unless there are objections, the new rules will be very liberal:

The "pot" should be named on the display table.
The theme can be chosen by the participant.
The plants can be chosen by the participant, but limited to 10.
The container can be chosen by the participant. (Remember you will need room to haul the plants you acquire at the plant exchange as well as hauling your entry home again.)

Let your imaginations run wild.

Now that's more like it!! We PNW gardeners hate rules! They're so,... I don't know... limiting! Let the imaginations begin!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I love it. Thanks for laying this out. We should have a crazy variety of fun combinations.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

theme: "best" weeds????!!!!

Vashon, WA(Zone 8b)

LOL! I am terrible at designing and maintaining pots and was laying low through this whole discussion thinking I could never manage to participate, but hey, I could easily do 'best weeds' oh yes: a centerpiece of Queen Anne's Lace, a little Stinky Bob tucked in on the side, Scarlet pimpernel to gracefully hang over the side, and dandelion seedheads to provide some architectural interest. There. And I could even add sheep sorrel so it have an element of edible use as well. Hee, hee.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

That would be awesome. Can you imagine if these guys got some good soil, water and food??? They'd be enormous!

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I remember seeing another variety of Cardamine last year for sale in gallon pots - looked just like the little ones on steroids.
Kathy - you know we grow some awesome spreads of creeping ranunculus, and I have shrub-sized Thistles each year. The Dandelion specimens can be stunning, too.
Lots of seedlings for all of the above & more.....

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yeah - I did think of a ranunculus pot. That's the plant for all seasons . . .

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I actually did put Queen Anne's Lace in my garden cuz I love it so. Yes, I do have to remove 'some' in the spring, but I really do love them. sigh

That's because one person's weed is another person's flower. I love queen anne's lace, too.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I love Queen Anne's Lace and would love to have it in my garden. I've dug it from the side of the road, but it didn't take. :(

Okay, now for my answers to all the above questions:

From the first post:
1. Are you coming, and how many will be in your party?

Just me.

2. What kind of accomodations will you require.

I have already made arrangement (with Lynn or was it someone else?) to stay at their place.

3. When are you planning on arriving, and when are you planning on departing.

I was going to come Saturday afternoon, but now can see too much fun stuff is happening on Saturday, so I will either come Friday night or Saturday morning. I'll let you know as the time gets closer.

4. Does the plan for Saturday sound like fun and something that you would be interested in participating in, or would people rather do stuff on their own? We want everyone to have the best time possible, so want as much input as possible.

I think it all sounds like fun and I want to do everything, including the Mt. Tacoma Nursery visit.

5. What time shoud we start activities on Saturday? What time should we schedule breakfast on Sunday? We don't want people to think that we are starting things too early, especially if they are driving out on Saturday morning from a distance.

I'm flexible.

6. As very kindly suggested, we are planning on arranging food to accomodate people who do not eat meat...but we would kind of like an idea ahead of time to help with preperation if you would like vegetarian chilli, etc.

I'm flexible. I do eat meat. Anything's good. Since a lot if potluck, I'm assuming people will all bring stuff they can eat if there are restrictions in their diets.

What a lot of work you all have put into this and I can't wait!
Gwen

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

OOOO Lord, how do I beat that, Well >>>...

I am coming on Friday
I think I have the cabin, not sure. If not I will have my wagon ( at least I hope it will be fixed by then) If not I can come up with a tent, No biggi love being outside.

Have no issues with anything, eating or otherwise. ( but I am a Smoker, Sorry) but I respect others. ^_^

Love all the ideas, got to catch up on them.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Count me in for the Lakewold Garden tour and visiting Pixydish's garden! I live quite close to there. :)

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

I'm in for Lakewold Gardens and Pixydish's garden and anywhere else for that matter!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Oh, I don't think I ever commented, and thanked Pixy for her suggestion that "southerners" like me could go directly to her house- that is just wonderful, much appreciated. Still not sure if I'll make it, but if I can, I'll head to Pixy's to meet everyone and go to Lakewold. I'm having a little of a hard time getting DH to make plans this year. I think some of it is due to his new job-we're not sure if he's going to start traveling again soon.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

New job!! That's awesome.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yep, he started in March, and is mostly working from home right now.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I'm also in for Lakewold and Pixy's garden. I'm in for everything! :)

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I just wanted to remind everyone that the Roundup is only 2 months away!!!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

And I can't wait!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Looking forward to it! :)

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

Me too, What fun

Ack! 2 months! I better start weeding now! LOL! I'm looking forward to having everyone here, even with many of the plants in pots.

When it gets close to time, I can email directions to my place to everyone. I'm about 5 minutes from the Gravelly Lake Drive exit off of I-5. Very easy.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Pixy Pixy Pixy, you obviously are living in some kind of dream world. It's not two months, We are already a good week into July. You are lucky if you have a month and a half left. Get your head out of the clouds, and get to work! We all expect perfection when we get there!

Poulsbo, WA(Zone 8a)

No worry Pixs, I am way behind too. to many set backs around here. are Ann. was D Day LOL washer broke, Saw broke, And I can't list the rest. LOL But I will be there, just to be with my DG friends

Still have no clue to what I have. I just keep filling in spots. But I do have some Hell babie seeds. But some are going across the pond. If I get some time off I will get it together, most of mine are not ready to divide as yet and my seedlings Suck. LOL

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

1.5 months - YIKES!!!! We still have to finish wiring the barn and then put the hardwood floor down, install the pellet stove, outside shower installed, patio enlarged, not to mention planting, weeding, enlarging the flower beds, cleaning, etc...oh my!!!! We'll see what actually gets done. I have been starting some cuttings for the swap, plan to get some more going for you all. So far, I have several Munstead Lavendar, Echinaceas, and Hardy Gardenias potted up, and 1 Black Lace Sambucus. I have some sedum that I will pot up for you, Sofer.

Oh, Gwen! You are going to be so very, very disappointed, I fear! LOL!!! Perfection, indeed! That will be the day!
But I'm going to have a LOT of plants to give away at the roundup. So far, I have struck out in rooting the cuttings, though, so I'll have to try again. I think it's because I use my gravel filter to root things and this year I had to add salt to the pond to fight off a couple of Ick infections on my koi. The cuttings didn't like the salt, I guess. I still have time to try again, though.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Perfection in a garden? Is it possible? I am at this point striving for having pathways that can be walked through without people having to do the "bob and weave"! It seemed like we had tons of time to get things ready...where did it all fly off to? The good thing is that it will be a wonderful time, no matter what is or isn't done!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Well, Pixy, you know that as long as you have 'giveaways,' all will be forgiven. ;)

Oh yes, gwen! There will be 'giveaways', I assure you! LOL! So that will distract people from seeing all the little things still 'undone'.
Add to the pot the fact that I will be gone for over two weeks just before the roundup. Woo hoo!! That should be a hoot!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

OK, I'm in. And I'd like to do the alpine tour. I'm a seafood-eating vegetarian but quite able to fend for myself on that front. If I don't have an Airstream with me, I'll sleep in the truck.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Summer, we have some sleeping areas still available, and plenty of parking for the airstream, if you bring it. Glad you are going to be able to come.

Hey, does anyone want plastic pots? I am keeping the 4 inch, but I have tons of big pots, even the huge ones, and they are taking up so much room. And the pile continues to grow! I hate to throw them away.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Lynn -

Many nurseries will take gallon pots back . . .

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Thanks Katie.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Lynn and Pixy, Summer had asked a good question regarding pets. How do you feel about people bringing their furries to your homes?

For anyone who is planning to come to our home for breakfast on Sunday morning, this is the scoupe.... We have dogs....lots of dogs... We would prefer people didn't bring pets (or at least kept them in the car) at our place. Not because we don't love them.... we just wouldn't want any tragic "incidents" to occur because our big dogs aren't used to strange animals coming and going. There is plenty of shaded parking, and we should also be able to accomodate a leashed potty walk if necessary....just trying to prevent major chaos!

Summer, If you eat salmon, we are planning on contributing fresh salmon (we should have plenty as we will be fishing a couple of weeks before roundup) for the Potluck BBQ, and our breakfast on Sunday will have plenty of fresh fruit. Got you on the list for the alpine garden tour!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I don't care if they bring their pets, as long as they are responsible for them. We don't have any fenced areas, so they are free to roam. We have lots of room, but I would hate to know that one ran off and got lost. Dogs love to come here and play.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I am planning on coming, but my folks still have yet to tell me when they'll be visiting. Most likely I will be there Saturday only.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Lynn, I'd be very happy to have any shrub or tree size pots you don't want if you have any that big. I always have use for those.

I was just going to come along for the Lakewood stuff on Saturday, but Julie's got me leaning heavily towards coming to camp out that night and sticking around for Sunday morning stuff. I have a tent, this would be a good excuse to use it. ;)
