lemon verbena propagation

San Antonio, TX

I have a lemon verbena plant in a 16 pot, I've had it now for about 4 years now and I just love it. It is now blooming like crazy and it has lots of new growth. What's the best way to propagate it? In the past I've tried from cutting using Schultz root stimulator powder. None of my cuttings took. It blooms but hasn't set seeds from what I can tell. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks you all!

if one of those lower branches is low and flexible enough, you could try to bury the stem while it is still connected to the mother plant, then separate it when it has some good roots going. never done this specifically w/ lemon verbena though.

I cannot find the thread where it was discused but I remember reading about a ziplock bag method. Basical pick a fairly strait branch, cut a hole in the bottom of a ziplock bag and slip it over the branch. Tape up and secure the hole, fill the bag with you soil mix and water when you water the plant. In time (I think it depends on the plant) the branch will have rooted in the bag. You can then cut the new start off the parent plant just below the bag, remove bag and plant.

Hope that helps and if I run across that thread I'll post it for you

that bag technique is called air layering. a search will give detailed instructions.

Can it be planted in the ground, allowed to grow, and then divided???

Depends on the zone.It is a tender perennial. Not hardy in my zone.I have had moderate success with cuttings using perlite.Edge
