Need advice moving grape vines tomorrow

Chillicothe, OH

A friend of ours is moving and said we could dig up the grape vines and take them to plant in our yard. They are Concord grapes, in case it matters.

We will likely be digging them up tomorrow (May 5th, 2009). I have not seen them since last year when I harvested the grapes for winemaking.

Here's what I intend to do. I ask that anyone who has experience moving grape vines might let me know if this is the right way to do this or if I should change something.

I plan to prune them back to maybe 18" above the ground, then dig around the root system maybe that far out (18") and cut the roots at that point. Then, I will be transplanting them within a few hours at my home.

Some questions that I have is:

Do I prune them back further than 18" high or leave more stems?

What's the best way to care for the roots (how far to prune them back, do I keep them wet, etc.)?

Anything else I need to know besides that it's best to wait until fall to do this? (The friend might move before then and we'll lose out on the grape vines if that happens.)

We have good alluvial soil here, so there should be no problem with soil conditions as far as I know. We're composting as of last year, so we plan to keep the soil in good condition as we tend our garden (grapes, hops, flowers, vegetables, etc.).

Thanks!!!
