Take care of it?
I planted about 4 of these last year and they were beautiful, now this year only one looks like the picture, and I'm not sure if I should cut back all the dead branches all the way down to the blooms or what. I'm very bad in the garden, but manage to keep most plants alive. Please help. Thanks!
Help! What kind of plant, er bush is this, and how do I?
I can't tell what the plant is. Take one of the smaller stems and break off the end. If it breaks easy then it is dead from last years growth. If it is a dead branch check a few others. If they are dead you can take off the rest of the dead branches.
So, cut all the branches down to the growth?
The branches do break easily, and there is no green inside. I just didn't want to break them too much, and because there is no growth yet on the other three, I'm afraid they died???
If there's no green inside then the branches are dead so there's no harm in cutting them down. I wouldn't give up on your other three yet--although I can't tell what your plant is from your picture my guess is it's something that's borderline hardy in your area and your plants were damaged by winter cold. If the others were damaged a little more than this one, they could be a little slower to come back in the spring. They might be dead too, but I never give up on anything until at least June and I'm in a much warmer zone than you!
If you can get a better closeup of the leaves you might try posting it in the Plant ID forum, someone there will probably recognize it and once you know what it is, it'll be easier to know how to care for it.
Thanks!! I will do that today
