Petasites or butterbur

I have a very shady garden on a large wooded lot. We have a huge problem with deer.

Is the Butterbur plant deer-proof ?

We also have a busy dog, it the plant toxic to dogs and cats??

This is 2 years later, so you may not receive this info......I have a patch of petasites giganteous and the deer occassionally take a bite to test it (probably the youngsters) but on the whole, they leave it alone.
