Daylily 'Pure & Simple' bloomed for the first time today. This was sent to me by a fellow DGer last year. I remember planting them in the dead of summer!
Who's Got May Flowers?
I love looking at everyone's flowers. It's like a garden tour while sitting in the air conditioned comfort of home!
I have a few new blooms too. Some new lilies I'm trying have bloomed for the first time. I faithfully marked them when planted, then the "permanent" marker washed off and I'm now trying to decide which is which.....
This is coreopsis, phlox and day lily Joylene Nichole.
Oh wow, Crow! Love all the coreopsis!
Mine looks just like that! ...except my front lawn is half dirt...and all of my flowers in the whole yard would fit in that one circular middle bed. ;-)
dingotx, I'm surprised to see clematis doing well in this area. What varieties are thriving for you and do you have to keep them in shade to beat this Texas heat?
Tonya
Pod~I plan on releasing it tomorrow! LOL The holes are there to let in air and rain/water.
bananna....I'm sorry but I dont know which clems those are. I originally wanted to plant a red, white and blue..those 2 are the survivors. Got them from a big box store, so not surprising they might have been mislabeled..and not matching the pictures.
loonie, how large does your pom get? Do you get fruit from it? I have a lot that are starting but I am wondering how large they will get and if they will be worth trying to harvest..LOL I dont expect to get them the size of the ones from California, but will be happy if they are at least baseball size.

Pod, the garden tour went great. I had a landscape plan drawn up with plants numbered and an information sheet to go with it that listed the plant names, if they were evergreen, fragrant, attracted butterflies or birds, etc. It was really appreciated by all the attendees. I expected we'd be doing good if we had a dozen people turn out for it, but we had over 100 people take the tour. I am now the "official" garden columnist for our neighborhood newsletter too.
The crinums you sent me are doing spectacular too. The spot I wanted them for has already flooded once this year, but the crinums and the La. iris didn't seem to mind at all. I'm glad I finally gave in and quit planting stuff that had to be replaced every time we have a heavy rain and switched to plants more suitable for that area. I'm stubborn, but mother nature will win every time, so it doesn't make sense to keep running into that brick wall!
Stephanie, that coreopsis came up volunteer. I had some in that bed a couple of years ago, but none last year. When it started coming up this year, I wasn't sure that's what it was. There was so much of it that I debated pulling it up because if it was a weed, it was taking over. It finally dawned on me what it was, so I left it and it's rewarded me with tons of blooms. In fact it's about to choke out several other plants in that bed.
Podster, my Agastache "Acapulco" looks as happy as yours. :-)
Earthling, my drawf Pomegranate had been in a big pot the past several years, and stays at a nice smallish (~3') height. I planted it last month and I'm hoping it won't get much bigger, even though its roots will have room to stretch. Yes, it does set fruit. But I've never tried to do anything with them.

Crowelli,,,,I am in envy !!!!! Sorry, if that sounds ugly,,, but you have a spectucular front yard !!!!!!!
Sounds so familiar,,, when you (I ) want something in a certain spot and it doesn't do very well ,, I keep trying to fix it and don't want to move it,, but finally give in and KNOW it doesn't like that place and move it !!!!!
Jana, thanks so much for the kind comments on my yard. I've met lots of neighbors since moving here due to my gardening. I have a photo of what the yard looked like when we moved in 5 years ago. It's a drastic change. I live at the corner of the 2 through streets in the neighborhood and I am usually in the garden early in the morning when we have some cut-through traffic. I've had a surprising number of people stop and roll down their car window and tell me how much they love passing my house every day to see the garden. It's so rewarding to find that other people appreciate and enjoy my garden.
Here's two more pics. The first is what it looked like when we moved in. The only thing we'd added to the yard at this time is the fountain.
The difference is daylight and dark, literally!!! Great job.
Crowelli, does your fountain have running water ?
jana
Yes, running water. I have one in the front and one in the back. I just love the sound of the water. Another benefit I've noticed is a lot more birds, especially cardinals. I had problems with the fountains getting algae until it finally dawned on me to use the same stabilized chlorine tablets from the pool for the fountains. No more problems. Here's a pic of the back fountain.
That is so beautiful !!!!! Question: are the chlorine tablets safe for the birds, butterflies, bees and dragonflies ? And what size(1",2") do you use?
jana
The chlorine isn't strong enough to harm the birds, bees, etc. I use the 1" ones for the fountains, so it's very diluted, but still strong enough to keep the algae out. I tried using just plain clorox in the fountains before I tried the stablilized tablets, but it doesn't work very well. I have tons of butterflies and honey bees all over the place here. Of course, in addition to the water, I plant food source plants for them.
Crow
What about mosquito's do they hang around?
Nope on mosquitos. They only like still water. As long as the pump is running, no problem.
Hey, earthling, I have a "dwarf" pom that's been in the ground for about 5 years. It's about 6 feet tall now. It bears fruit and they get a little larger every year. So far none are baseball-sized, and don't taste very good. But, my first taste of pomegranates was from the bushes of the lady down the street while I was growing up. She had several large dwarves and didn't ever harvest them, so we knew she needed help (LOL). They were quite good, as I remember.
Crow, have you ever thought about trying peroxide instead of the chlorine or bleach for the algae? I have pretty good luck with it.
Anne, I've never heard of peroxide for algae. I used to use barely straw in a small pond at my last home. I didn't want to use chlorine because of the water plants and large breeding population of frogs and toads. When they were laying eggs, I couldn't keep the filter clean. I usually turned the pump off until the tadpoles were large enough not to get sucked into the filter. They did great at keeping the mosquitos away.
pbtxlady..thanks for your comments about your pomegranate. My plant is only a couple years old, this is the first year it has really had blooms and trying to make fruit. I love pomegranate so am hoping that eventually I will have enough to eat.
You live close enough to me to be considered a neighbor..maybe we need to meet some day. When I first moved to Texas, I lived in several plances in Garland, north Garland was my old stomping grounds.
Loonie, you are even closer....I might just pay you a visit to check out YOUR pomegranate, too.
Kris
Does anyone know where I can get some pink honeysuckle plants..? My DD wants some pink and I really dont remember seeing any for sale. Maybe someone else has..
Thanks, Kris
