Baltic and English Ivy

Hatboro, PA

Hello, new house new yard, lots of shade and weeds (lots). Is it insane to plant a few ivy plants? I can trim it once a year. Just like if a dish or utensil doesn't make it through a dishwasher cycle I don't keep it. If I have to continually trim a hedge, plant or vine I don't want it. So please let me know your opinion. I'd rather not be asking 5 years from now how to get rid of it. Thanks - Zone 6 btw.

I'm not sure how it behaves in your climate, but in many areas ivy can be a rather aggressive grower, so it may not be as low maintenance as you want.

I'm using Vinca Minor as a living mulch in one of my flowerbeds that is mostly shade and it hasn't been at all aggressive. I also had it for about 10 years under some trees at our other house. It was easy to keep in check by mowing where we didn't want it. Also, once it reached out to where it was sunny, it didn't fare nearly as well as it did in the shade. Ivy can be very invasive. It won't stop at taking over all available ground, it will grow up your trees and almost anything else that gets in its way.

Baltic and especially the English hedera will be a bit much for you to handle in the year's to come if you plant it.

Thank you, it doesn't sound like it's worth the risk. It could be a little easier in the beginning but I think I'll go with some other ground cover - plus I really like Vinca Minor, thanks for your replies! Back to the garden store...
