Ground cover for sloped area

Any one have suggestions for ground cover that is in-expensive and comes back every year. We had thought about grass, but it is a big area and probably cost a fortune. We live in the very southwest corner of New Mexico so it also has to be drought tolerant. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Here's a great website that specializes in plants that will do well in your area. http://www.highcountrygardens.com/ They've got a number of different groundcovers. I don't necessarily think you should buy them there since you can probably find better prices locally, but you can get ideas there of things that would do well and then go to a local nursery and see if they carry it. (ground cover isn't going to be any cheaper than grass...probably more expensive to put in, but if you put in something drought tolerant then it won't need as much water as the grass would so over the long term it'll be cheaper)

Stepables is another good source for ground cover. Many of the sedums are drought tolerant and some spread pretty fast. I have a western exposure that gets blazing hot during the summer and I've put sedum as a living mulch--so far it's doing great. Look around their site to see if anything would suit your needs.
