Using weed cover

Mountlake Terrace, WA

Last year we tore out the grass strip between the sidewalk and the rockery that divides our split level yard. I planted mostly with perennials, some annuals, dahlias and a couple of tomato plants (it gets a lot of sun). At this point there is still a lot of space between plants which the weeds just love. If I put down weed cover with a mulch on top of that, will that keep the perennials from spreading out and would I just leave bare patches where I put in annual seeds like marigolds? My hope is for this to some day be a very full cottage garden.

I would try just mulching for starters, or put down some newspaper underneath the mulch if you want a little added protection. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the weed cover/landscape fabric in garden beds in the first place, and when you have a bed that already has plants in it, it can be difficult to get it put in. Not to mention any time you want to plant something new you'll have to cut a hole through it.

If you have seeds that haven't sprouted yet I would hold off on the mulch though, it will help prevent weeds but it'll also help prevent plants you want from getting started, so I'd wait until after your seeds sprout and get a little bigger, then mulch the garden.

You could also use some type of ground cover to fill in the bare areas. That's what I'm doing in some of my flowerbeds and it's working great.

If u clear the land, the weeds will come. Could utilize space for herb type plants to fill, or good smelling weeds like pennyroyal that have a minty smell, cover space n act as a fleabane to boot! or other even usable herbs that r lo growing, ez remove...
