good grief - I am dizzy
What have you ordered for 2009 - Part7
I knew we could count on you, Thom, to bring in a big haul.
I forgot where I planted the Solomon's Seal from you and was surprised one day to see it popped up. Looks great.
OMG---thanks, Thom---I'm now on the DL register----my DH is going to kill me, but what a way to go! Loved the DLs you ordered, but I got sticker shock---I paid $100 for 5 roses today, using a $50 gift cert. & I'm still shaking----OK---I bought grasses & a fern, too! Here are the roses----2 Sunspot, 1 Carefree Apricot Celebration, ! pink Iceburg, a 1 red Meidland that I can't remember the name---senior moment!
Victor, I'm trying to plant a hosta "theme" bed...I am not trying to offend anyone, so please don't be, it's just my twisted sense of humor. But I want to plant a "Loose Women" bed. So I'm trying to find sources for all of the 'Striptease' sports, there are over 20 of them! Some of them are easy to come by (no pun intended) and others are a little bit more difficult to find. I'm going to try and find/buy the following:
'Gypsy Rose,' 'Hanky Panky,' 'Harlot,' 'Kiwi Tease,' 'Mata Hari,' 'Cabaret,' 'Peep Show,' 'Pole Cat,' and the most tame name of them all, 'Yellow Polka Dot Bakini.'
If and when I can find them all...I'm going to have a pretty interesting Hosta bed...lol.
I have Soloman Seal popping up in places I never planted it. I wonder if it seeds itself? The only good thing is that where it pops up there are usually only 1 or 2, not dozens. And SS is pretty easy to identify early in the season. I'm glad the SS is doing well for you, it's probably the most resilient (next to the old varieties of hostas) shade perennial I know of!
I had a box of Dahlias that I had saved over the winter from last year, I believe I had ordered about 20 or so different varieties from Dan's Dahlias and Connelly's. They started to become a home for fungus gnats, so I planted them outside (a little early I know, but if I didn't they were all going to get thrown out) and they've started to poke their heads out of the ground.
I plan on buying 2 medium sized horse troughs. I want to pot it up with Banana Canna in the back ground, 2 bananas on each end, some of the Iresine I've saved for cuttings, and the black leaved Dahlias in the middle of it, and then sweet potato vines in the front. I'll probably stick the canna Stuttgarts in each of the containers to give it some mix of color and texture.
Are you kidding, Thom - offend me??!! Good luck!^_^
I want a loose women bed too, and it has nothing to do with gardening.
No Vitor...lol...wasn't trying to offend you :-) I didn't want any of the nice ladies here on the forum to get offended :-)
I still can't believe how man 'Striptease' sports there are. I rechecked, there are 38. This isn't including sports of sports. I hope that makes sense. As in, 'Striptease' was a sport, and while trying to produce more 'Striptease' more sports emerged from that, and so forth. Pretty amazing considering that 'Striptease' was introduced in or around 1999!
Sounds like an Olympics idea!
Thom - do you have a single favorite online hosta source??
Thom I'm a girlpeople and I'm not offended in the least. You MUST find a 'Floozie' hosta. I heard that Solomon's Seal doesn't spread at all but false Solomon's Seal (Smilacina racemosa) does. Both are wonderful plants IMPO. I think your dahlias should be fine now in your zone (Pirl will know for sure). If it is going to be f*r*o*s*t*y throw sheets/towels over them. I can't wait to see the pics and hope you will share them on the Dahlia Forum cuz we are crazy about pics even if you just have a few ^_^ My cannas are slow coming in the greenhouse this year but the callas are booming.
Victor, hands down favorite is Naylor Creek: http://www.naylorcreek.com/
I think that Jack and Gary are just awesome...and they are really great to talk with. Last year I believe between ordering from them, and winning bids on the hosta libraries auction I received about 40-50 hostas from them! They are just a really great vendor. If you like Epimediums they have a huge selection of them. I'm not a fan of epimediums yet, but I'm sure (like everything else I do) if I buy one, I'll want a bunch of them...lol.
Jim's Hostas is another great source...Jim can be a little bit more pricey than Naylor, or some of the other places, but his stuff is really nice...and he sends a free hosta with every order. I purchased several times from him last year, and each time got a freebie!
DG's very own Ed, from Bentley Gardens is really nice to email/order from.
You did ask for my favorite, and I'm going to stick with Naylor Creek. I think because about 80% of my hostas are from them, I'm a little biased...lol.
I will definitely share pics. I'm slow at taking them and uploading them, but I get it done. I'm just not the most tech savvy person out there and when I get aggravated I have a "forgetta bout it" attitude...lol.
Thanks, Thom!
I hear you Thom. I'm soley at the mercy of the whatever pic program thats in my puter. Also I'm a bad pic taker too so I often skip the whole pic thing. I do hope to get better at it though.
Thom, you really went gung-ho on the ordering, didn't you! Wow!!!! I checked out the 2 daylily sites and I liked Paul's best. I ordered a pricey daylily that I'm getting this month called Michael's Sword. It's a bearded one. Paid $150 for it, which is a lot for me. It better live!!!
I like your Loose Women bed theme. Interesting idea. You could do the same with daylilies, I'm sure. I thought of making a Sin bed with a variety of different plants. I got the idea when someone on DG made a typo and wanted to type sun bed, but it came out sin bed. LOL! Thought it was funny and commented on it. Said it would be a great theme for a bed. Hey, if anyone has any thoughts on plants for the bed, please let me know. I think I would prefer it to be all 'hot' colors, like reds, oranges and yellows, with risque names.
Robin, you have a bunch of nice plants there, too.
Cousin nut, I like your choice in hostas. I have been wanting to collect more of the dwarf and mini ones. I have some but want more. They are just so cute!
Karen
Thom, that's a funny idea...isn't there a hosta stiletto?
Hey nuts-here's stolen treasure...

Thanks for the hosta referral - I adore them and will check out your suggestions. I'm interested in purchasing some mini's
Good to see you, Anita. I'm looking to add hostas around my pool where the weeds are ridiculous.
Theres a daylily called 'Carmine Desires" and it's a lovely red.
Nice list Thom!!!!! I just got a 'few' too and in one shipment I got 2 bonus plants:
"Mountains Bow Down" and 'Touched by Grace"
I checked my archive list from the LA...lol...my mailman is going to hate me. I don't know what's taking some vendors to send to me, but I should have about 40 of them coming. A large chunk is coming from Cheryl Day (cherylady) most of which are Munson introductions! I won a DF of 'FL RagaMuffin' and haven't gotten it from the vendor yet, and should have considering where the vendor is from...lol. I'll probably get a bunch dropped off this weekend, and I'll be out of town :-/
Thom, great sense of humor and an amazing detailed list of cultivars and sources. I love all your details. They are very helpful to me. I love doing plant research so following your garden is a joy.
I hit a couple of great nurseries yesterday on my way to Vt and surprise, surprise, I bought a few things! I went to Bay State perennial farms in Whately Ma which is a little gem of a source that I always love buying from. They have very interesting woodland plants especially. They don't ship, but are delightful, knowledgeable, and have a great little display garden and their prices are very fair. http://www.baystateperennial.com/index.html
I picked up a nice collection of shade plants and 2 Japanese Maples. A very nice palmatum ‘Yatsubusa Kashima for 40.00 and Acer japonicum ‘Branford Beauty’ for 54.00 and a Rhamnus frangula ‘Asplenifolia’(Fern Leaf Buckthorn) for 30.0
I will list the shade goodies after I get them entered in my journal. I also went to another nursery on Rt 116 off rt 91 near South Deerfield (Sugarloaf) and picked up 5 cytisus scoparius Lena that I have wanted for a long time, plus 2 of the Moonlight ones. He had them on sale at 15.99 each which is great price. All big and very healthy. The yellow ones are in bloom, but the others not yet which is great. Patti
Being my usual compulsive self I really over did ,my wife is a bit stressed with all the deliveries. The worst part is I didn't keep records so I double ordered alot of plants and bulbs.Having a time finding a spot for some.Yesterday UPS went past the house and didn't stop and I said Thank God a short time later he came in the other direction and left two large boxes,Maria said,"you have bought enough for a couple years!!!!!" I also got a shipment of toads again they seemed a good help last year.
Yep, 'Stiletto' is a Hosta...I think it may be a mini...The AHS is rewording "minis" so not sure if 'Stiletto' falls into the mini category, or the very small/small category.
I went to one of my local garden centers, the place is called Bud Schultz's Garden Center, it's in Dunmore, Pa...Anyhoo, 2 years ago, I got on this medium/dwarf conifer kick, and started to read up on all things conifer. If you haven't discovered them, google/find Iseli's Conifers http://www.iseli-nursery.com (they are a wholesaler only, out of the Pacific NW somewhere, not exactly sure)but I was going through all of their conifer offerings and happened upon http://www.gardenworldonline.com/srv/library?ID=1127915 Excuse my rambling, but if you like conifers, you'll see why I was all goo goo gaga over this beauty. Well, one of the reasons I love visiting Bud Schultz's is there conifer selection, hands down, better than any other nursery/garden center in the area or several of them combined. I sought 'Chief Joseph,' but found plants that were only 6-8" in height, growing in quart to 1/2 gallon pots selling for about $100-200, and was like, NO WAY...NOPE...NOT GONNA...I was walking through and meandering around Bud's, and low and behold...TWO 'Chief Joseph's', they got them from Iseli's, they are growing in wooden boxes that are about 1.5'x1.5' feet, and are about 4' tall or so...Absolutely stunning. The kicker...It's a measly $350 for one... I told the owner that if he had them on sale at the end of the summer I might have to take one home with me, after I save up some moolah. Ok...long story, I know...but I'm totally stoaked about 'Chief Joseph.'
I wonder what 'Chief Joseph' would look like planted with all of my hosta harlets? :-)
Nice JM haul Patti. I'm still eyeing up 'Shirazz,' and may pick one up sometime soon. The 4' are going for about $180'ish...so may take a gander but not a buy, YET.
Schicken, if you are looking for a "giant" hosta, search out 'Juraisac Park' or 'Empress Wu,' those two are ginormous. There are a few others, but those two are insane in size!
I've been watching some of the "etched" daylilies. If I can find a bearded one, for a reasonable price, I may pick one up. I just got into hybridizing last year, and that would be neat to throw a beautiful eye onto a DL with that fringing in the eyezon spreading out to the petals/sepals. Imagine 'Gavin Petit,' 'Goldenzel,' or 'Crazy Ivan,' crossed with 'Michaels Sword!!!' Woo...my brain is dizzy already...lol.
Speaking of bargins I go to a small nursery in Terre Hill ,Pa and he has the bargins.Huge hostas for 7.00 shrubs and trees all VERY inexpensive.3' Rhodys beautiful condition 15.00.
Gorgeous, Patti! How big do they get?
Very nice!
Victor, according to Bay State's site
ACER japonicum ‘Branford Beauty’ New A beautiful if still somewhat obscure Japanese Maple with a low weeping habit. From its low mature height of around 4ft., its long, supple branches cascade earthward in dazzling sweeps of airy, deeply disected green leaves. Similar to Acer jap. 'Green Cascade' but a bit taller. Expect a mature plant to be around 4ft. tall by 10ft. wide.
Acer palmatum ‘Yatsubusa Kashima’New A very dwarf Japanese maple slowly growing to a mature height of 5-6ft. and at least as wide. Ultimate size depends on the amount of attention plants receive with pampered specimens growing faster toward the higher estimates while those less fussed over grow much more slowly and hover at the lower height range of 3-4ft. Plants are a favorite with bonsai enthusiasts who maintain miniature specimen for decades. The tiny leaves unfurl light yellow with a brick red edging, become green in summer and in autumn display good yellow color. Habit is dense, shrubby, and at least as wide as tall. A natural choice for the rock garden, for a front row position in the mixed border and, of course, for containers strategically placed on patios, stone walls and steps. Grow in sun and light shade. Said to be drought tolerant. Zone 5.
Thanks - they sure look nice and full. I'm always on the lookout for nice dwarf ones.
patti i really like those maples!!
I laughed, Gamekeeper, when you were glad the UPS went by----I do the same if my DH is home or not napping----but he did spot the delivery today that came when we were out---but when I told him it was an order of peppers, he didn't care---just flowers irritate him----too Scots! Nice orders Thom & Patti---& I love the idea of 'themed' beds----too funny. I went to WFF today & bought a dozen tomato plants, ie 'Eva's Purple Ball' , Giant Syrian, Red Reif's Heart---the place was wild----too many folks enjoying the sunny day for a change. I also erred when I posted Sunspot as a rose I bought---I looked at it, but bought 'White Out'---
Polyygonatum multiflorum 'Variegatum' and helleborus nigra arrived on Saturday. I put the helleborus in a pot in the greenhouse til I decide what extra-special spot it should be in.
I received some stuff from Deer Resistant Plants - hellebores, artmemisia, ferns and lavender. Was going to plant them today but it's been so nasty. Plus I'll wait for the possible frost tonight to pass.
I am off to bring everything in!
I'm off to bring everything out----I HOPE it's finally safe to plant, because I'm going to anyway. Won 3 DLs on the lily auction---'Mary's Baby'---because I actually am, & Petit's 'Clearing the Fog, " & 'Carnival Mask'. I have Thom to thank for getting me going in that endeavor!
I brought all the new kids in last night too. It got very cold about 28 and was only 33 at 7:00. Nice day up here in Vt today. We went to a 4 local nurseries and got some great plants including a lot of veggie starts, as I failed miserable this year with mine. I still have a few annuals to get and I have a few things on the Big Wish List to look for, but nothing that is a must have....well, not until I see one that instantly becomes a must have! I will list them when I get them entered in my journal.
Victor, either the rabbits or the deer , though it looked more like deer, destroyed most (7) of my hellebore last winter in early Feb all in one night. Most have recovered well, but I am going to move some of them to behind the deer fence in the fall. The only one they didn't chew on much was the oldest and biggest one. This collage shows some of the damage to 3 of them and then the one they didn't eat back to nothing in bloom in March. I do love them and was shocked that they got eaten. Hope the critter had a wicked tummy ache!
I forgot that lavender was on the deer resistant list so I think I will divide some of mine and move to a bed that could use them that is outside the fence. Thanks for the thought. Patti
Wow - that's unusual, Patti. Sorry to hear that.
I don't think it is at all normal. Plus these are planted within 4 feet of the house. Patti
Robin too funny about being "Mary's baby" but what a beautiful daylily!! I bid on one this winter but didn't win it...was that you bidding against me? lol
No---I just bid on those 3 for my first experience---wasn't too sure what to do, but I got 2 for the min. bid, & the 3rd for $1.63 over min. bid. I'm hooked, but out of cash for awhile! Planted EE in a pot today---never had one before, but all those photos last summer intrigued me. Patti---really bad deer---I thought hellebore was poisonous, but maybe only to humans.
