May Flowers

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The standard spray handle will fit on a qt. of alcohol. I keep one in the gh all the time... 100% solution doesn't hurt the plants...but soap may clog the 'pores' of the leaves...Ivory is a harsh soap. I never spray anything in full sun...not even fert.... Bayers Rose and Flower spray works too...but why spend that money when the alcohol works just fine...

Paula, that's a really great photo of your lacunosa bloom! For some reason I can never get a decent picture of the blooms on lacunosa.

North Central, ID(Zone 6a)

Yes, I know what you mean Lin - they are so PURE white that it is hard for the photo
to not wash out. You've just got to play around until you get the light right. Believe me,
you, it took lots of shots to finally get one focused !

(Zone 1)

LOL Paula. I am the worst photographer! I literally take fifty pictures and maybe get one that looks halfway decent! I need a camera that will communicate with my brain ... or maybe it's the other way around? ^_^

Don't you just love the pink tinge on the flowers of this one Ric? I agree, a lovely scent.

wow Awanda....that is some really yellow pottsii.....I love it!

Awanda, your yellow pottsii looks like the NOID pottsii I've been trying to ID. It finally bloomed for me last week and its picture is at post # 6536749 on May 11th. What do you think? Thanks.

Christine

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Christine your pottsii flowa looks the same as mine. I've had mine for years, but it just bloomed for the first time last year.

Blessings,
Awanda

Thanks so much Awanda, I got mine in 2005, and its grown like crazy, but this was its first flowers. Now I can change its label from NOID; its original label was cinamomifolia.. I had even thought it might be a nicholsonae, but coincidentally they bloomed at the same time, and nicholsonae's flowers are similar, but noticeably smaller.

Thanks again.

Here's my H. pottsii...blooming for the second year. I amazed by the long peduncle!!! Sorry for the miserable photo...but the corollas are a creamy white... tho' color doesn't make a big difference as it can change.

This is H. aff. anulata - love this hoya!!! Blooms constantly and the leaves turn wonderful colors in the bright light.

Ooh, ooh, Carol---I think that arnottiana might be my NOID hoya (which just opened blooms last night)....could you tell me---did the buds have purple marks on the outside? and is the fragrance a very strong sweet carnosa or pubicalyx, not the spicy scent from the rigida/acuta/verticillata group? Thanks...

Shelley

Grrrr...never mind....I just researched arnottiana on the web, and the leaves are not the same....mine has the same light green color, but they're very thick and long and have 3 distinct longitudinal veins....the flowers, however, are identical as far as I can see....maybe some sort of hybrid?

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Can you post a photo of your leaf and the umbel?...maybe on a new thread and we can chat about it?

North Central, ID(Zone 6a)

My H. carnosa Tricolor bloomed for me - I do get a hint of a chocolate smell ! It took a year and a half from rooted cutting - plant - bloom !

This is the second flush of H. sp. Ban Nok Ngoy (spelling...?). It has 7 (yes seven) umbels in bloom right now and it is still not terribly large at all. GREAT fragrance.

Carol, can you post close up of your H. sp. Ban Nok Ngoy? it looks just like my gungle garden. Mine is a small plant, might have a wrong name.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

The bloom is very similar to H. pubicalyx...and the leaves are different, look more like H. carnosa leaves . It does have clear sap. Wouldn't it be funny if some seed from some collection in Thailand landed in the place called BNN and now it is going around as a species hoya? Sure does look like a pubicalyx but DL is sure it isn't. Some sexy bit must be different!!! I can tell you it blooms better than any pubicalyx I have!

I just hate it when I do that!!! Sorry...don't knw what happened. The photo didn't show up when I checked it the first time!!!
