Possibly black knot? You can google it and compare.

Thankyou. It looks like what the tree next door has and my newport plum is about 15 foot or closer to it and its only about 2 years old. I got it from walmart. The tree next door is about 5 years old and has allways had as long as I can remember and alot of the bottom limbs are dead. My question is can my tree catch it from it and how can I prevent it without using chemicals.

I'm curious--did you find out what it is?

Asheville, NC(Zone 7a)

I think it is black knot. How do I keep my tree from getting it. My tree is 15ft or less away. Can I prevent it without chemicals.

Wow - that's not a disease we see frequently in my part of the country, but the photograph you show certainly does look like the pics of Black Knot Disease shown on the internet. Here's a link to a website with some prevention and treatment information: http://www.utextension.utk.edu/publications/spfiles/SP277-X.pdf

This is just one site with information - I suggest you go to www.google.com and enter "Black Knot Disease" in the search area - it will list numerous sites for you to visit to get additional information. It sounds tough to fight, so you'll probably want to read everything you can find on the topic. Good luck to you with this problem.

I am not familiar with those products, but they appear to be fungicides that you apply to help you fight the disease. I'd contact a local nursery in your area and ask them if they carry the product or if they know where you can get it.

Thankyou.

You're welcomed, Landscaping. Perhaps your neighbor would let you assist them in treating their trees, (and that would help you protect your own trees). Good luck to you.

Me and my neighbor do not get along.

If you've determined satisfactorily that it's black knot, then it may be useful to know that non-chemical treatments are as effective as anything. Just cut out the affected branches; sterilize pruners between cuts.
