Pear tree problems.

Asheville, NC(Zone 7a)

The blooms on my 2 Kieffer pear turn black and brown and the leaves right next to the bloom turn brown the rest of the leaves look fine the trees have done this 2 years or longer. The first year I planted I planted the first tree it make good fruit and then I moved it 2 times its been about a year or more since I moved it and still no fruit. The second tree has been there about 2 years it has never make fruit they both bloom I even cover them last year with sheets to proctect against frost. I have also prune them to keep out crossing branches. The trees are 6 foot tall and one was potted and one was burlaped from local retail store. The leaves look real green and healthy. Does this sound like disease.

Hello again, Landscaping92. I don't know how many gardeners here know much about fruit trees, but if you would repost this question under the FRUIT AND NUT Forum on Dave's Garden, I think you would get a lot of help.

I'm wondering if your pear trees might be suffering from Fire Blight...Check out this website for more information:
http://www.nysaes.cornell.edu/pp/extension/tfabp/firepm.shtml

I am no expert on diseases affecting fruit trees, but the folks on the Fruit and Nut forum should be able to give you a lot of help if you over there. Good luck!

Thankyou.

I check and the fruit and nut forum is not free. So I can not use it. I do not want to spend on a subsciption.

I understand, Landscaping. Let me see if I can find out more based on your photos. Give me a day or two. In the meantime, perhaps someone with more experience will show up here with some answers. I'll talk to you soon.

Landscape92: I have a similar problem with an OLD pear tree. ARe the leaves on some of the branches getting small brown spots?
I was told that the pear tree has some kind of blight but it's not fire blight. Last winter I cut the tree back sterilizing the pruner after every cut, then I sprayed the tree and this spring it looks much better. I thought I was going to lose it. I lost an apple tree that near it.

Yes my Cleveland Select has those spots my Kieffer Pear my have them to. The Cleveland select has a curled leaf.

You might try taking in some little branches, leaves, flowers, etc that are showing symptoms to your local extension office and see what they think--they will probably know what is going on.

Okay thankyou I might try that. Does fireblight live inside the tree or just on the outside. I mean is it in the trunk and inside the limbs.

I found it may not be FireBlight the nursery man said that if the branch tips are not black then its not FireBlight and there not black and he said my problem was a fungus said he could not think of the name at the moment but to use fruit tree spray with sulfer and captain. My friend gave me some he did not use anymore since his trees got old and died it is dragon fruit tree spray which has a fungicide aphicide miticide scalicide so its supposed to treat bugs to and the fungicide should treat any fungus I have even if it is FireBlight. His assasiant said that she once had FireBlight on her apple tree and she put down lime for some Azaleas she had planted under it and the FireBlight was gone the next year and if I remember correctly she said to use potassium or phosphate. I think Catrscr might be right about it being another kind blight or something else.

That sounds like very good news, Landscaping92. Good luck with the sprays - we'll keep our fingers crossed. It looks like you may be able to get this problem under control.
