Daily Pics Vol. 210

Norman, OK

My turn in the barrel to start a new thread. Hope I do this right.

How about starting off with another pic of the wild turkey that visited this a.m.

You did great reddirt. I loved you turkey photo on the last thread, and now another one! Cute!

My Crows are working overtime every day chasing the eagles away from our house, then they stop by the feeder for a peanut snack.

Took this photo last weekend at our state park. You can't really see them, but there are over 8 Great Blue Heron nests in the top of this 30-40ft. Oak tree. Unfortunately the lake was choppy and the boat wasn't very steady for better photos.

pelle, Thanks for the advice on turning off the ads here. I've done that and checked Firefox to make sure I have ad block on. This York ad just keeps popping up. It's peskier than a herd of pi$$ ants at a picnic! :-)

Love those crows!

Downingtown, PA(Zone 6b)

What are the daily post rules? Is it one pic per day? Should the picture be of a recent bird visitor, or can I dig up some of my favorite pics from a few years past?

Here's a pic of a baby Eastern Screech Owl that nested in my yard last year.

EDIT: Sorry for the double post, not sure how to delete it.

Hi evie,
thanks for the compliment. Watching an owl family get raised was an incredible treat last year. I'd vote Purple Finch too, but I'm pretty bad at telling male rosy finch species apart. Hopefully Resin or one of the other experts will weigh in with something more definitive.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Oh man, what a nice collection. I hope you all are having as good a time with spring migration as I am.

Jec, that owl is so cute, such a "hoot."
duc, you continue to amaze me with all those birds! Love the heron "condo" and the crow.

Congrats lily on the nuthatch, Looks like it to me evie! But it's been a while since I've seen one.

Cool turkey reddirt.
Duc, I love your Hooded Oriole shots on this thread and the last. That Red-winged Blackbird is a beauty too.
Jec6, LOVE the owl!
Mrs. Ed, congrats on the cardinal egg!
Evie_bevie, WOW on the purple finch!

On the last thread, someone asked about Indigo Buntings and what you could plant for them to eat. I think. Maybe I imagined it. Anyway, I had a Painted Bunting in my yard two years ago that ate ajuga seeds for about an hour, and last weekend at the river, the Indigo Buntings were also feasting on wild ajuga seeds. I love ajuga and I'm planting more of it!

Well, I finally broke down and bought a new feeder just for the little birds. Then this pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers showed up this morning and one of them tried to eat from the little bird feeder and couldn't. Neither tried the big bird feeder and then they left. I was so bummed. It's the first time that I've had red-headed wp in the yard in two years.

Thumbnail by Elphaba

Their gorgeous Elphaba!!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Aren't they pretty. I saw two pair at the river last weekend and I've been thinking about them all week and then there they were. It's that law of attraction in action. Wish I could make it work with riches!

Here's one more although not a good shot. It's been a very dark day.

Thumbnail by Elphaba
Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Ephaba, that is just amazing. Glad you are helping with the feeding. These guys have Near Threatened status.

Thumbnail by Mrs_Ed
Marlton, NJ

Oh nice one!!!

Essex Junction, VT(Zone 4a)

yay, a purple finch. Rare for me to see those. I also saw a Northern Flicker today, also a rare one for me. Two in one day...not sure to jump up and down, or wonder if the world is coming to an end ;-) esp since I saw turkey vultures flying low over/near my house :o

;-)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Jec...your owls are sooooo cute!!

Elphaba...so cool with 2 red-headeds!

I can't really match that, so how about 2 Male Baltimore Orioles...

Thumbnail by nanny_56
Marlton, NJ

Nanny, Are they shy around you? I was wondering what to expect this year if I see them. The whole family I saw immediately disappeared when they saw me except for the mature male.

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Nanny, two male orioles is totally a match. I've had the same experience as Pelle. As soon as I try to get near or take a picture, they disappear.

Mrs. Ed, I had no idea what a female Rose-breasted Grosbeak even looked like! Thank you for sharing such a great picture. I'm trying to commit it to memory, but if I saw one, I'd probably have no idea what I was looking at!

That link was really interesting too. Thanks for sharing. I was worried about the woodpeckers at first because so many of the big old trees were lost in the hurricane. From that link, that could be a good thing for red-headed ones. Also there are still a lot of damaged trees out there with dead limbs still hanging from them that are probably bursting with bugs. Could be a good year for woodpeckers.
