Buffalo, NY

what date is best to plant clemitis in zone 5?

Tampa, FL(Zone 10a)

Clematis is a hardy vine, tomorrow would be perfect day to plant.

In spring, as long as the ground isn't frozen, you can plant any hardy plant, the earlier the better. Planting when things are dormant causes no problems.

My limited experience with clematis is that you really need to be patient. I planted one three years ago, and nearly gave up on it. The second year, it finally seemed to have established roots, and I was rewarded with a few flowers on 6 ft tall vines. This year, it looks significantly better, with dozens of flower buds. I've read that the vines like warm, sunny locations, but the roots like a cool, moist habitat. So, definitely add a couple of inches of mulch around the roots. Good luck; once established, clematis can be very dramatic for a long period of time.

Clematis: Head in the sun & feet in the shade with 6 hrs. of sun. The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap. Be sure to keep I.D. tag to find out what "Group" yours is in for pruning. Make sure to plant deep (2-2 1/2") with at least two sets of buds underground-- this will give you re-growth if it's accidentally mowed over or if it suffers an infection of clematis wilt. The climbing trendils will latch onto small trellises about the size of a pencil or smaller. Large lattice or arbors with thick wood will not help them. I've used old soccer nets and fishing line to steer them upward. Clematis are worth it... They're the Queen of the Climbers!!

Magie,

Tapioca would be a house plant for you. You might want to ask here> http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/houseplants/all/

We use them as landscape plants in the southern half of Florida, they are a tropical I believe.
