DAILY PICS - VOL. #209

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I moved our finch feeder so it out and away from every thing else and they seem to like that. I don't think they like all they extra activity from the grackles, starlings and jays. The jays are coming & going all day so they must be nesting or getting ready too.

I also switched around a couple feeders yesterday. That will keep the bigger birds out at the platform hopefully and give the littles ones some peace up here by the house!

Speaking of Blue Jays...

Had an unexpected bird this a.m. On my neighbor's lawn across the street. I don't know why I'm surprised, I've seen deer and coyotes in our neighborhood.

For the record, it is a hen Rio Grande Turkey.

A Rio Grande Turkey! How cool! I've seen Blue Jays alot, but have seen none ever comes to bird feeder. I guess they prefer insects over seeds?

Hi Lily,

Blue jays LOVE peanuts. They prefer the nuts still in the shell, but will happily gobble down the shelled variety. At my feeder, they often use their bill to sweep all of the millet and "lesser" seeds on the ground to get at the peanuts. If you put a few out every morning, they will get used to your schedule and be sitting there waiting for you.

Rose Breasted Grosbeaks showed up today. 3 of them! What a treat. The picture isn't great - it's raining and dark and dreary here. But they brightened the day.
