HI everyone I need your help. The rear of my house gets Sun all Morning and early afternoon. The Front of my Yard gets NO or Very little Sun in the Morning & ALL sun in mid afternoon to Late evening. when Planting in the front of my house what kind of Plants should I plant there? Partly SHade, Mostly Shade, Some Sun, etc? When the sun arrives at the front of the house it is usually around 2:00pm and lasts till the sun goes down (depending on the time of year anywhere from 5:30-9:00pm). I want to do a cottage garden out there but am Afraid it wont last with All the sun in the afternoon.
thanks

Important Question for Planning my garden
Morning sun is kinder to plants than afternoon/evening sun. For the back of the house, you can plant things that will grow in sun and/or partial shade. For the front of the house, I'd choose things that are more "full-sun" tolerant.
You can definitely do a cottage garden-style with full-sun plants. There will just be certain plants that you can't include. For perennials, think about Agastaches and Salvias providing tall spikes of color, with things like Penstemon, Mallows, Achilleas, Gypsophilia and Lychnis providing lots of possible color combinations in the middle. Asters can provide late summer/early fall pockets of color. Dianthus (pinks) and Stachys (Lamb's Ear) are nice front-of-the-bed plants. Roses work well in cottage gardens, and definitely love full sun.
Hope this helps give you some ideas to start with....
Great advice from go_vols! I would add some daylilies, and tall bearded iris, also phlox paniculata for August color. And definitely, roses would be a good foundation. [This all with reference to the cottage garden in full afternoon sun]. Save the peonies and delphiniums for the morning sun... John
Hi Tamlamb' I have a cottage style with some "traditional plants" but with our high wind factor had to adjust a little but it's what "I" like, lol' Your light conditions are somewhat like mine also.In my back yards,I installed garden arches with Jackmanii, daylilies, nasturtiums at their bases.I had moonflowers started also to entwine but my bunnies got them' Snapdragons love sun too'A must for me is sweetpeas and nicotianas for fragrance and allysum'Also glads love the heat and plant them at intervals to have constant color' Hope this helps' Sis'
Can't foget zinnias and sedum for fall color''
Sis, your encouragement to use glads made me remember - I recently saw some of the old-fashioned "hardy glads" (Gladiolus byzantina) which are more delicate than the modern hybrids and look really nice in a cottage garden. And sweet peas - absolutely. Good ideas!
John, how could I have forgotten phlox? Almost a requirement in a cottage garden :)
HI everyone
Thanks for the wonderful ideas for my Cottage garden. Atleast now I know what I should & shouldn't plant.
Tamlamb
I have the same situation as you Tamlamb and the front of the house gets the 'real' heat of the day. I have just planted these new beds in a new garden and while it is a bit of a hotch-potch right now I will have to keep an eye on certain things. I planted most of what Terry suggested and the sedums which are a must. I included some evergreens because I don't want it to look bare in the winter months - the bones as it were. This included a conifer, a pyracantha and a Chinese holly. To this I added buddleia, a crape myrtle, abelia, iceberg roses and a viticella clematis which will climb the iceberg and then the porch. Then there is the white joe-pye and the tall boltonia with it's hundreds of tiny flowers. The plant that has done outstandingly well is the lantana which will come back next year - I planted about 4 and they have virtually grown from a small pot into 4 feet every which way. Behind these I have rosemary. One point I would make. The roses didn't look too happy in the heat of the sun and the blooms soon faded, but that was in temps of 100 or more. Now that we have cooled down somewhat they are looking wonderful. Oh yes, Flower Carpet rose also. So this is the reason I have planted the crape myrtle, just to give some shade during the hottest part of the day. Oops sorry this turned out so long folks!!
