Received six lavender (Munstead) plants via mail from a well-known nursery yesterday. Planted them according to directions yesterday afternoon at about 4:00 p.m. This morning, one of them is completely wilted and looks like a goner; three are partially wilted and the other two look fine. Is lavender known to suffer from "transplant shock?" What to do? Thanks, Falsabaiana
Wilted lavender after transplanting
Any plant can suffer from transplant shock. It probably would have been better to wait a little to plant them--you don't know what conditions the nursery had them in and they were in a box for a few days shipping, so I generally let things rest somewhere shady for a few days to recover from shipping, then gradually work them up to garden conditions. They also may not be used to your temperatures--the fact that you planted them in later afternoon and they're looking bad after spending the night outside tells me that they may not be used to your temperatures. Typically when I plant things in the afternoon they look great the next morning, and it's not until the following afternoon when the sun's been beating down on them that they'll start to look unhappy. Was the place you got them from in a warmer climate than you? Even if they were in your area, they might have been growing the plants in a greenhouse/hoop house.
I wouldn't give up on them yet, if you're having cold temperatures at night you might consider putting a sheet or something over them for the nights. And be really careful on the watering--you want to make sure you water them, but be very careful on the amount because lavender doesn't like wet feet. I'd do the "finger test", stick your finger down an inch or two into the soil near their roots, if it feels really wet then they don't need more water.
Your weather might be a factor. Even though you are only an hour north of me, the Catskills are full of microclimates. I noticed that you are about 22 degrees cooler than me today. Was it cold last night? (We were broiling!)
