Sweet Gum

Deltona, FL

I planted a sweet gum a few years ago and it has grown a couple of feet every year straight up. The problem is it is not growing out. Its branches are not very long and it pretty much looks like a very skinny tree. Is it possible to stimulate branch growth? I have heard cutting the top off but I wouldn't know how much and if this is truly safe. I don't want to stop top growth all together...

It is maybe 15 feet tall, 3 feet wide.

Thanks

Do you know which cultivar you have? There are some sweetgum cultivars that are very upright and narrow so it could be you have one of those. If that's the case I don't think there's much you can do besides replace it with one of the wider growing ones. Can you post a picture of it?

I can try to get a photo up soon. I don't know the cultivar. Thanks for the reply!
