I recently moved into a new house with no grass. The builder is getting ready to lay the sod this week. We did a Soil Sample through the local Cooperative Extensive Office. The Sample came back with high levels of Phorophos and very low levels of Nitrogen. The suggestion was to add a Nitrogen fertilizer. I do not know how to read the numbers on the Fertilizer packages. Do you have any suggestions? Also, should I put the fertilizer down before or after the sod is laid?
Help, Trying to decipher my Soil Sample
Call the Extension Office for a better explanation
Our Agent puts recommendations on the reverse side and adds another sheet if necessary. That is part of his job. All samples submitted to that office return to that office for his observations.
Example from mine : add 150 lbs of lime per 1,000 square feet (which is about the size of that particular garden).
Fertilize prior to laying down the sod would be my recommendation. Ask the Agent for her/his opinion. It never hurts to chat up the Extension people, they are good allies and resources.
