Darren - There is a lot of fill under my house, so I am actually on a small "hill", so no standing water in my yard. Come a hurricane down the road, though, might be a another story. LOL!

Oh how cool! Love your little hummer! Mine is gone for the summer. Though, last year, one showed up for the month of July. I have the perfect area for nesting and raising little hummers. :-) If only a bird or two would figure that out! LOL!

like your bird darren ;-)

Thanks Ceej and Becky ~I know the pics are supposed to be on the other forum but hey~Becky mentioned it I think in this or her MG thread ~dunno ~anyhoo. got lucky ...Becky do they actually leave your area entirely?? Do you have none that are there year round or are endemic to that area alone? Vegas has six that are here year-round. just curious~o ...my plant of Rose Silk MGs is looking nice and healthy, I hope to se it climb high next, and flower by june at the latest, thanks for those Bluespiral~!

Darren - I mainly just get Ruby-throat hummers. And they do fly north for the summer. Probably too hot here for them. They are the cutest! :-) You are lucky to have them year-round and to have so many different hummers. I am so jealous!!!!!

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I have my hummer feeders out so should be seeing some of yours soon, Becky.. Darren:
my Convovulus have come up ;D

...most of them here are brown-green in coloring. This is the first red throated one I have seen. According to maps I have read the actual ruby thoats don't ''go'' here, so it must be a different species. If a better pic comes I can post it on the Hummer forum and get an ID. I had my first day-lily today but still no Covolvulus blooms!!! ...waiting...and waiting and, OH there is a hole in my soaker hose~! aaaggh~! ...so much for the quiet restful morning! LOL
:Darren

FINALLY~whoo`peeee i got my blooms beginning~

last number 4 ~I know these are common but I have never had sucees withthem by seeds or whole plants before this year. I cant wait to see how they do thro the summer and winter here now they are established. its 3 plants in the corner of a bed of lantana so I cut the lantana back enough to let some light in but no enought to cook them and should be golden. At least that is the plan...that is the WRONG picture, LOL its supposed to be n the summer 2009 thread~ whhooops! a moonvine, som cardinals and a very small LYK.

the two plants from last year are just huge didnt realize that if the seeds stayed for the winter they would start that early they are pretty hardy little seeds

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

wow those pink ones are so beautifull
mine wont bloom for another month or so still to early

what time do they stay open till Martin?... and do they open on the next day?

i love the markings in those flowers...

Aschaffenburg, Germany

They open at around 11 a.m. The sun is vertical, and shining full power at the balcony from 12 to 2 p.m. By 2.30 p.m. the flowers keel over and point downwards, perhaps by then they have been pollinated by some straying insect or the wind. I have not encouraged the formation of seeds by removing all withered flowers daily. I had done this last year with the 3 o'clocks too, but decided at one stage I couldn't keep up with the speed they produced new flowers every day, so I disontinued my practice. Mirabilis is incredibly quick in forming seeds, it only takes two weeks, so I had literally tons of seeds in a short time, but regrettably they stopped flowering then...

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

yup that is it either dead head or they go to seed and then no more blooms I dead head in the garden everyday that is my summer job hahahah a little weeding here and there and picking the spent blooms

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I deadhead as well.. a leave a few of my favorites to seed on a stem or two, but I have found that trimmig the mirabaalis really helps, I have blooms all summer into frost, and get to hand pick my fav colour seeds ..

Mona in Metcalfe, ON(Zone 5a)

I usually dont allow anything to go to seed till the end of the summer that way I get the max amount of blooms, and I always fertilize every two weeks to make sure the plants get everyting they need for max amount of blooms, since my season is short I want to see as many flowers as possible in the time I have
