Why aren't there any more convolvulus ensign lovers?

Aschaffenburg, Germany

This the first self-grown convolvulus ensign...I really love the ensigns and am looking forward to getting some blue ones. I sowed them last September, they survived the Moroccan winter and are now as big as the newly sown ensigns from March 2009.

i like them i love convolvulus i just cant seem to get any to grow for me. but would love to have them in my yard too

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Me too. No luck with these at all.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

well I never even heard of them until I came to Daves Garden, so I have a bunch to start out back here, and I know they will do fine.. I will post pics as they grow out on this thread..

Martin - Lovely! I, too, have had no luck growing and getting these plants to bloom. I am growing some more outdoors and will see what happens. They are truly beautiful!!!

Aschaffenburg, Germany

I've noticed that the bloom that flowered yesterday has opened again today. If this is true with other blooms it would be very unusual for a Morning Glory to bloom on two consecutive days.

it would be cool. i plan to try a few more myself but aint holding my breath. for some reason these are hard to get going here. as you see we are in different areas and states and just no luck.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

that is awsome, Martin... last year I had the ground convolvulus, it had tiny blue flowers, that stayed open all day.. I look forward to these abloom for me.. the colour is really cool looking on yours.

I have some of your ensign seeds growing out, Martin; they are frail seedlings but I am hopeful they will begin growing out well.

Clatskanie, OR(Zone 9b)

I have grown them here at 45 degrees north lattitude, but they do not make seeds here. I just presume they don't have a long enough season to ripen their seeds. To grow them here you always have to buy fresh seeds, and I prefer the Burpee offer. Frank

I can't get them to grow taller than 5 inches, then they just die.... Would love to get them to grow as big as yours, Martin. I just love the look of them.

Elsa

I grew Royal Ensign quite a few years ago with little trouble. I enjoyed the nice compact plant and brilliant flowers. Martin, what is your secret to growing the other Ensign strains, you seem to have good success with them?

Joseph

Aschaffenburg, Germany

Joseph, it's the first time I am growing these. My morning glories in general are doing lots of strange things this year, I get so many mini-versions of both nils and purpureas but don't really want that. I am resowing a whole lot of various morning glories and am also trying the kitchen paper method for sprouting since I seem to loose a lot of seeds. Luckily, I have now two Q751s up and running. They also seem to have produced miniature versions if that's normal I cannot see how they will grow into huge plants as I saw Becky had last year...

Here is another bloom of the pink ensign.

Joseph, here is a mini-version of seeds that came from Elsa who got them from Korea. I thought they were nils, but looking at the sepals it may be a hederacea.

I have lots of seedlings this year. I soaked the seeds for a day first, and then started them in peat pots and trays. I've had some in other years from soaking the seeds and then putting them straight into the ground.

Martin, I just love the one from Korea. I started a few seeds, and the ones that flowered all had very small, dark pink flowers. The plants stayed small, so I pulled them eventually. Will try again next season...

Is there a wild type Convolvulus tricolor? What colors are in its flower, if so?

Netcong, NJ(Zone 5b)

Convolvulus tricolor is native to the Mediterranean area and the wild flowers are mostly a blue...the other colors seen are dilutions from the darker blue...

Thanks, Ron, good to know. I personally like the vivid blue of the darker forms.

Birmingham, United Kingdom

I am growing the 'species' this year, sorry I don't have seed, but the blue form is native to the med, I came across a lovley sky blue form in the hills above Kassiopi in Corfu. Don't know how it will do in the UK but looked impressive at the time, I am suprised more people don't try this species, apparently they are half hardy perennials

these are my plants, waiting on some blooms. I believe they were Burpee.

Second plant has some reddish color to the leaves/stems. Hope the flowers are very tricolor!
