Need to know blooming time for some of my bulbs!

Jamaica, NY

Hello, I am gardening for my first time and I am basically clueless about when to expect what and what not. I just bought a collection of summer bulbs but I don't know the bloom time (how long it'll take to flower and etc.) for any of them. The set includes the following varieties: Brodiaea Laxa queen Fabiola, mix of gladiolus, liatris spicata, Allium and Poppy Anemones. I also have some dahlia and zinnia seeds. I live in NY (zone 7). It is the end of April, I'm hoping my flowers would bloom within a month so my garden doesn't look empty in the summer. Do you think it's too late to plant them? Will they flower in time or will I just end up having a garden of leaf foliage for this season?

Since you're in a very different zone than I am I don't know exactly when the ideal time is to plant your summer bulbs, but I don't think you're too late. Generally you plant them when the soil is starting to warm up in the spring, so in your area I would guess that's sometime between now and the end of May. I don't know that they will bloom within a month though, they have a certain time when they typically bloom and that's when they'll bloom. If you're worried about having color, I'd run by the local nursery and pick up some colorful annuals, that way you'll have something interesting even when the bulbs aren't blooming.

I live in zone 5.I always say my garden peaks in July.By that I mean most of my plants are in bloom.I don't plant my zinnias and dahlias until June 1st.They don't bloom till August for me.Start a journal, keep notes on when things bloom. That way you will have a better idea for next year.It also helps if you want to move plants around (transplant) in the fall.If you know when things bloom its easier to get the look your going for, when you transplant.Hope this helps.Edge

My husband (NOT a gardener) grew up very near there, and there are a lot of subscribers quite near you on the North East Forum. I don't know the specific answers you're looking for, but it's warm enough up here to plant nearly anything. Go to Home Depot and see what they have out - if they're selling it, you can probably plant it. Zinnia and dahlia seeds for sure will flower this summer but start them this warm weekend!

Buy lobelia (blue trailing or not trailing) by the next few weeks or they'll be all out for the summer - you can stick it in all over the place, especially in shady spots. Soak the anemones before you plant them. Good luck!!!!
