Live in Santa Barbara. Want to make a thick hedge of clumping bamboo to cover a fence and provide privacy. Want something that is going to be 12 to 15ft. high max. The area is about 75ft long and gets direct sun from about 11am to sunset. Need help choosing the right bamboo. Was looking at Fargesia robusta 'Green Screen', Chusquea coronalis "Mexican Climbing Bamboo", and a few others. Our backyard is very tropical with many exotic palm trees, cycads, etc and would like to find a bamboo with the same tropical feel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Choosing the Right Bamboo?
I'd like to know also. Which is fast growing?
Here's a great site to browse around for ideas, they've got a ton of different kinds of bamboo: www.bamboosourcery.com
Hi SBRyan, for the Santa Barbara, CA area, sounds like you might be interested in Bambusa multiplex, Hedge Bamboo.
Bambusa multiplex is traditionally used for privacy hedging, and can handle temperatures as low as -7 degrees C / 20 degrees F.
The cultivar, Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf', makes an exceptional hedge; it would be perfect for your needs!
Aloha, Dave
Thank you all for your help, especially Metrosideros and ecrane3. I will definitely take the advice and use it. Have a good one.
