Black Lace elderberry- two questions

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

I have two black lace elderberries that I got one and two years ago. Right now they are planted in large containers and are generally very healthy.

First question is about pruning them. I was away and didn't get them pruned at the proper time before they started leafing out for this year, and there are some not so full branches that i'd like to get to branch out more. I'm not worried about losing the flowers/fruit for the year if I can get the plants nice and full. So, should I go ahead and trim these scaggly branches way back now- to where I'd like them to branch off? or is it too late for this year, and I should wait 'till next?

Second question: I want to plant one of these in the ground at the side of the house. Should I wait 'till late fall when it is dormant to plant it there? Our house is old and the foundation is a little fragile. Does anyone know what the root system of these is like when they are mature? Any ideas on how far away from the house this need so be to avoid any problems?

This is still early in the season, should be a good time to prune branches.

For Sambucus, Elderberry I remove anything that hangs downward.
