landscape fabric

Indianapolis, IN

okay folks i need to know your opinions on what brand / type of landscape fabric to use..i am looking at preen and dupont..dupont seems to have more choices but im not sure what to pick. I figured I would ask people that have used landscape fabric

Piedmont, SC(Zone 7b)

I have used it for many, many years but only learned recently that there are different thicknesses. So I would look at the thickness of the different fabrics.

Waterman, IL(Zone 5a)

I use the very thick kind when I do use it. It's tougher and less likely to get holes in it. I mostly use it on the edges of beds to keep the lawn from encroaching.

Dublin, CA(Zone 9a)

I suspect there's not a lot of difference between the various brands--they are all made of similar material so the biggest difference will be the thickness. But if you have two brands that are the same thickness I don't think you'll find a huge difference in how they work. If you're using it under a path or something like that, I'd go for the thickest one you can find--it'll last the longest and do the best job of keeping weeds out. For garden beds thicker would still be better in terms of preventing weeds, but I'm not sure if the thicker fabrics allow as much air & moisture to get through so it may not be as good for your plants. Personally I'm not a fan of using landscape fabric in garden beds at all, I'd use newspaper & mulch instead.

Deltona, FL

I hate landscape fabric. It may prevent weeds from coming UP, but does nothing to discourage weeds from growing on top of it. Then their roots get tangled in it and it's a bear to get them out.

I use newspaper under mulch. It's free, and it's environmentally friendly.
