How to shade plants? Calla Lillies

Mission Viejo, CA

We have some Calla Lillies in a place where they get too much sun. Last year they were burning up. I made a weird makeshift thing that blocked some light and then they did well.

I want to provide them some share during the hotest time of summer. I did not find instructions on how to do this on the internet, perhaps I was asking for the wrong things. I was thinking of taking that garden fabric like I used to keep weeks out, and suspend it over the flowers. It will filter some of the sun shine. Should I use green or black fabric? How should I hold it over the plants?

I realize the final solution would be to move the plants, but I don't have any good place right now.

I haven't used it but I've heard of shade cloth for plants that does just what you're talking about. Maybe do a google search for that :)

They sell shade cloth that people put over greenhouses/hoop houses for the summer months...but you'll have to rig up a framework to attach it to.

alanjones: The hottest time of the summer where you are (like here) can get almost too hot for them to perform well. When that happens, I just cut mine back to ground level. They pretty much melt in the summer heat and look horrible if they're in too much sun anyway, and the flower production is minimal.

I'm assuming you're referring to common white callas...they can be moved very easily and are almost indestructable. You could always plant something else around them so that when they're cut back, you won't have a bare spot.
