I have had this plant for a long time. I got it when it was little and now it's huge .I want to transplant it into a smaller pot. What I want to know is,what exactly is this plant? How do you care for it? How do I keep it from getting bigger without hurting it? What do I do if I go to transplant it and it is root bound? Will it be okay if I transplant it into a smaller pot? What do I do if the roots won't fit into a smaller pot? Please explain in good detail because I don't know anything about how to care for this plant. (Obviously I am doing something right because I've had it for years!) All help is appreciated and thank you.A special THANK YOU goes out to Shari who directed me to this forum so my question will be answered.Thanks.Shari!
Tree Plant?
The only time I'd move something to a smaller pot is if it's in a pot that is too large for it, which does not appear to be the situation here. If you've had it for that many years and have never done anything with it, chances are it's rootbound and could probably stand to be put into a slightly larger pot.
The plant is Dracaena marginata, Money Tree.
Rather than place it in a smaller pot, it needs to be in a bigger pot! Then the plant will fill out and get healthier.
If you want a smaller plant you can trim it back and the stem will sprout new growing points. Use the trimmed off top-growth for cuttings to make more plants.
