My hostas got too much sun last summer, so I want to transplant them under my Silver Maple trees. I see hostas growing under large trees all the time, but - There are a lot of ground/surface roots under my large Silver Maple trees. Can I still plant my hostas between the roots or will the tree roots choke out the hostas? Thanks.
Hostas - Where to plant?
They recommend planting 6 feet away from the trunk and do not add any additional soil on top of the roots of the tree.
There are so many surface roots from the tree - even six feet out from the tree. Will the tree roots choke the hostas as they try to grow there or are hosta roots pretty strong?
It shouldn't be a problem if the trees are already established.
If you do choose to plant your hostas around the silver maple, you will likely have to water them extra. The tree roots will take up most of the available moisture. You could put them in pots though.
I made raised beds under trees for my hostas. Also have others in containers. I have large oak trees. Good luck with yours,
Vickie
You cannot kill a hosta in the shade of a tree, veiny roots or not! Plant around your Maple Tree all you like!
I have many young ones sprouting their heads right now in central NJ and thriving well amongst the
veiny roots of our Maple tree, with too much mulch I'm afraid!! Just dig right into the roots and plant, water til established! I generally only water in extreme hot weather, only if they're drooping. That's my experience, no
pro here!! See photo taken today, and Good luck.
