Question on maples.

Asheville, NC(Zone 7a)

Wild maple and Tame maple. Is there a such thing as a Wild maple and Tame maple I have heard serveral people tell me the Wild maples grow faster and Tame ones are the ones you see staying smaller and more round. My neighbor used to have too maples in is yard that where both the same age and both trimmed very little. Everyone told me the reason one was smaller and grew slower and growed more round was because one was a Wild maple and one was Tame maple both got about the same amount of sun.

There are a ton of different maple species which grow to all different sizes. I'm assuming by "wild" and "tame" people mean ones that are growing in the wild vs ones that people plant on purpose in their garden. The trouble is that there are probably several species of maple that grow in the wild in your area, and there are probably quite a few others that people grow in their gardens and they are all going to be different sizes depending on what species they are. The size has nothing to do with whether it's one that occurs in the wild in your area or not. The two that your neighbor had which grew to different sizes are undoubtedly two different species of maple which just happen to grow to different sizes. If you have some pictures of the maples in question, you could post them on the ID forum and someone can probably tell you what species they are.
