Nice photo, I like the lighting. I am just getting started with the lotus this year. I have several different ones now. Hopefully they will be as beautiful as yours and I will be able to post some pics later this summer :) Would love to see some other peoples photos as well.

Nice one Bev.

I'm not sure of the name of this one; however, it looks like it has some yellow as well as pink. I think it's N. 'Strawberry Blonde.'

can anyone tell me if the fertilizer tabs from texas water lilies are supposed to be dropped directly into the pond?

Tucson, AZ

btw, i really like the lotus pics. i guess i have you all to blame! LOL :) i am ordering one now along with some fertilizer tabs. however, i don't know if i can go through that many tabs before they start to lose their potency.

Claremore, OK

TARogers5 - The photo you posted looks like iris to me.

Tusconplumeriaz - The fertilizer tabs go directly into the soil in your pot. Just push the tab into the soil with your fingers.

Gotta dash storm coming,

Will write more later Deb

Lovin these photos. Will the lotus flower from tubers the first year? I read somewhere online last night that they might not, but maybe they meant from seed. It didn't say if they were referring to tubers or seeds...

Tusconplumerias, don't feel bad I have 5 now and one more on the way. I have grown waterlilies before but this is my first year with the lotus . We can learn together :)

Claremore, OK

angel_tree_baby - I usually have lotus bloom from tubers the first year. Seed the second year holds true for me. Dinu has a thread going in this forum on growing lotus from seed.

If you start a seed, it may or may not look like the parent plant. A lotus tuber should look exactly like the parent plant.

Back to the fertilizer tabs. They make a lot of bloom production difference from my experience. You poke them in the pot and cover the hole up with soil. In a big pot I will usually put four sometimes 5 tabs around the outside edge . I aim to fertilize every month during the main growing season. I don't feed in September. I start feeding the end of April or the first of May. As the lotus matures you'll be able to feel the lotus tubers with your finger when you fertilize. I ususally divide a pot every 3 to 5 years.

Deb, I planted lotus tubers, but they're not doing much. I ordered them from Dusty at Texas Water Lilies. He said not to fertilize until the leaves are as big as your hand. The leaves on mine are the size of quarters. Maybe I should call and talk to him, but I thought you might be able to help me. Do you think I should fertilize now?

I believe the recommendation of the correct time to fertilize your Lotus is when the water temperature reaches roughly 70F. degrees. And it's said to stick the tablet into the soil and not just drop it into the water itself -- because it's slow release mechanism. Read your label instruction. Last year I over fertilized mine, and it toasted the leaves to a well-done, cooked like consistency. Thanks goodness, I quickly realized what was going on, and changed the water and saved the lotus.

Lily, I didn't get any instructions with mine, just a little bag of tablets. I'm sure the water temp must have reached 70 by now. I might just try fertilizing one of them and see what happens. Thanks!

I had the same question on one of mine. I am glad you asked it :)

I've to admit I've heavy handed on the fertilizer. Here is a recap of what mistake I did so someone can avoid the mistakes.

waiting for my lotus... i will be easy on the fertilizing. thanks for the heads-up.

i will put it in a 15- to 30-gal container. it will be the only showcase plant in there. i'll probably add some oxygenating plants and a few fish. that's it. i decided to use course sand as the planting medium. is it bad allow the lotus to grow freely in the container?

Yuma, AZ

I pushed a tablet in each of my lotus pots. When I added it to the last one, it felt like I broke a tuber! I hope it's okay.

Lily_Love - Weren't you using ROSE fertilizer? I've never had any problem with the Aquatic fertilizer burning any of my water plants. I do not put it right next to a plant I'm starting out. I tend to put it around the edges of the pot.

Walto - Try it Dusty's way. If I have the time, I'll conduct an experiment with some lotus tubers I haven't potted up yet and follow them with pictures.

Anyway, I started this thread for lotus photos soooooooo, back to the pictures.

Beautiful pix Deb! I was sharing what potential harm to the lotus if heavily fertilized. Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread.

I ordered water lotus from the Texas Waterlily Co-op in 2008. Mine bloomed the first year, only a couple of blooms but they were very pretty. I ordered a hardy one and it is coming back for me this year. Here is a pic from last summer.

This is one in Madang, PNG. Look identical to our native ones, but the leaves were on much shorter stems, although just as big. They were very crowded in with waterlilies, Kangkong and other waterplants.
