those look so lovely deb!
They are all lovely I have leaves but no blooms yet. Will keep watching and enjoying yours until mine come out.
Yes, I am Zone 6 in south central Pa. I know they will come I just must be patient. Talking about native water lotus. The largest northern stand of water lotus is in my area about 15 miles away. Here is a picture from last year of them in bloom. This is only one small area, it is a protected wildlife sanctuary.
Wonderful place to be HollyAnnS!
rickinla -nice photo
HollyAnnS- I'd like to see some close-up photos of those native lotus in bloom.
There are some native lotus in parts of Oklahoma that have been identified as N. lutea; however, the blooms I've seen in photos are large and yellow with pointed petals. I
What a beautiful color.
Lily_Love - How is that lotus growing? Is it in the lake or a tub or pond?
HollyAnnS - Thanks for the bloom photo and info on the smell. I'll have to go stick my nose in some of my lotus and see if there is any fragrance. Usually, when I take pictures in the morning they are full of bees.
Lily _Love - Do you have to do anything to the tub in winter?
Here is one of my blooms from today. This looks like 'Empress.' to me. This is in my stock tank lotus area.
Not here Deb. Occassionally the tub will freeze over. But the tubers stay dorman over winter. They promptly sprouted back when weather warms up.
Those lotus they're irresistable, aren't they? And the bees, I can see the last picture that the seeds were successfully pollinated! Come more babies!
Darlindeb, I will try to remember to post back here later in the summer when they are blooming again. My newer camera should be able to get a closer look than those old pic.
My lotus had 4 buds on it. One has bloomed and the petals have all fallen off. Now that beautiful seed pod is left on it. What do I do? Do I cut it, leave it on? These are my first blooms.
Thank you for your help.
It took roughly a months from the time the flowers were spent (all petals fell off) to the time all the seeds turn a dark almost black color. This is my second wave of bloom. The last wave was a month prior, and you can see the seedpods still hanging in there. I'll need to harvest them before they're ripe and fall off the pods.
Happgarden - I've never cut mine while green. I was always told never to cut the flower or leaves below the water line because it could contribute to killing the tuber. There is another woman in Oklahoma who said she did cut the lotus while in bloom and used it as a cut flower in the house; however, I haven't tried that yet.
I haven't had any blooms at all this year, but the leaves are wonderful....larger than they've ever been!
darlindeb, what a beautiful bloom. Is it huge like the name implies? Mine is a hardy and I love it.
My seed pods look like yours so I will wait. I was rattling it yesterday....LOL
Finally mine opened this week! Big and creamy white, and for the love of me, I have NO clue what the name is.... :)
Yipee! More pictures from you all. I wouldn't venture a guess on the name.
My lotus has bloomed and the seed head has given up its seeds, is it normal for the lotus to look like it is dying? Has plenty of water...LOL
Mrs_Ed, are those hardy where you're? Wow!
Happgarden, I've come to realize the Lotus does go through a period of dormancy, or semi-dormancy so it seems. Mine too, when that first happened, I thought perhaps I had overfertilizer them (in years past), they appeared "burnt" to me. But later in the season, they made a come-back.
This year, after they finished blooming and made seeds, they're once again turning "yellow"! Please keep touch, I'll share new development on my Lotus this year.
