Name that plant??

Orlando, FL

I found this and serveral other plants in thrown out in someones trash one day. I stopped wanting to get the nice planters but decided to repot the plants that were shriveled up and dying in new pots and a year later they are very happy and growing nicely.

Everyone who comes over wants to know what this one is because its so cool looking. I am assuming its some type of succulent or cactus but not thorny.

Kalanchoe spp. - they apparently become very weedy in areas where they are hardy outdoors, as all the little plants fall off and rapidly propagate themselves.

that is a cool plant!

Wow, with that many babies on it, it could get SERIOUSLY invasive in the ground! Maybe it should be called the "bunny plant," LOL. It is neat looking though.

I love these. I have heard them called "Mother of Millions".

I am your word on this--seriously! They rock. They are called mothers of 1000s or millions. Along the north gulf coast we call them alligator plants. I must note this- it is an invasive species...without constant plucking it can take over your whole garden area. Best I can tell from research (I've been growing them for three years now) they come from SE Asia and do not tolerate the cold at all. If you have three nights in a row that are even 30 it will kill most all of them off.

They are neither cactus or succulent. Depending on how you grow them they can flower after 9 mons. to 24 mons. This plant requires zero care, it can take it hot and wet or hot and dry. The last two winters they were my winter flowers...by the time they flower they are 2 to (yes, I'm not bsing you) 7 feet tall. I grow mine in very full sun, with a slightly alkaline soil. I had one named "the general" that reached 7 feet before being weighed down by all the flowers. They're small red tubular things but with the bottom side down don't seem to attract hummingbirds.

The first time I saw one was in Mobile Ala about 15 years ago.

Ours were in bloom from just after Christmas until...well, hell, I've pulled most of them up, but we still have a few with flowers on them now.

Wonderful plant but with a warning.

Set aside a 6x6 area for them, but anything that goes beyond it you have to pull....they can grow out of crack in concrete. It is an invasive weed, no matter how much I love them.

Alligator plant.
word.

mother of thousands is the common name to it

Keaau, HI

The plant is Bryophyllum daigremontianum, Devil's Backbone. It is native to Madagascar.

The plant was formerly included in the Kalanchoe Genus.

Bryophyllum and Kalanchoe plants are often referred to as "Mother of Thousands / Millions", due to their ability to make numerous plantlets along the margins of the leaves, but the common name does not refer to any particular species.

This succulent plant can be invasive if placed in a garden, but is easily controlled when grown in pots.

Thanks guys I posted this before realizing there was a whole section dedicated to plant IDs. I have had it for a while and have yet to see any babies but I will keep and eye out and make sure it doesnt go crazy.

Thanks!!

There are lots of babies showing in your photo.

Saint Cloud, FL(Zone 9b)

I saw blooms of this plant for the first time early this year, and they were very nice, and tall, as someone else pointed out! :) However, the plant has taken over half of my garden, and I spent 2 long days hunched over picking the babies and bigger ones out. I'm still not done- I've done about half. Thankfully, the roots are very shallow and as long as they are big enough to see and easily pull with your fingers, they come out super easily. Finding the tiny babies is hard, though. My own fault- hadn't paid attention to my yard for years. I just caught the gardening bug... :) So when I see this plant I associate it with its' spreading habit. Me no like.. :( haha!

Yikes well I have yet to find any babies that have tried to grow outside of the pot so far. I am guessing that maybe this is why someone had thrown it in the trash. I still think its cool and get lots of inquiries about it so I will just pluck any new plants I find trying to grow.
