shady question

Jefferson, GA

We live in North GA zone 8. The front of our house, and the area we have our flower beds faces west. It is shaded by the house until noon...then you can imagine how hot it gets in the front when GA sun comes around in the summer! Would that area be considered "part" or "full" sun? Any flower/shrub suggestions? Thanks, as always!

If it get sun all afternoon it would absolutely be considered full sun. And since it's afternoon sun and you're in the south, you may even find that there are some plants that supposedly like full sun that aren't happy there. Hopefully someone who lives in your area will have some suggestions for you. I have a similar west facing bed that bakes in the summer sun and I grow a lot of salvia, agastache, gaillardia, gazania, and lavender but some of those may have trouble with your humidity so there may be other plants that would be more appropriate for your climate.

Tithonia, Mexican sunflower, would be a good bet in a spot like that.

Thank you! I thought it was full sun, but was not sure if it had something to do with the number of hrs it was in the sun. That is a good idea to check with the local farm or extenstion office for suggestions. There was salvia planted in that area when we moved in...that was about it. Hopefully, that is not a sign! :) Thanks again!!

Thanks Zen~ I have always wanted to try Mexican Sunflower! Just the name says it all for full sun!!

The number of hours of sun do count--generally 6 hrs is considered full sun. I'm assuming you probably have 6 hrs of sun during the summer in a west facing bed that gets sun starting at noon, but even if you're not quite at 6 hrs, afternoon sun "counts" more than morning sun and southern sun makes it even worse, so even if you're only at 4 hrs or so of sun, a "part sun" plant will fry there.
