2nd Season of 'trying' to garden. The sad thing is, as green begins to come back to my garden, I don't seem to know the difference between plants and weeds.
I took pictures last year hoping that would help me to know what should come back where. Very close, but not exactly where this 'green thing' is coming up, I had 'Jethro Tull' Tickseed planted.
Is this a weed...or is my Tickseed possibly coming back?
I probably have several weeds growing, but I'm scared to pull them in case they might possibly be one of last years plants.
Help!
Lisa
Is this a weed???
It has pretty leaves. Let it grow if it gets ugly than pull it. I've had wild things grow and turn into pretty plants and also turn ugly. So just injoy for awhile and then decide.
The only problem with letting it grow, which I will do I guess, is that I only have so much room in this bed.
Mother Nature and her demand for patience. She is really do her best to teach me this year!
It looks somewhat like some type of Shasta daisy. You didn't happen to have any of those planted in the area did you?
No NatureLover...No Shasta Daisy. Does your comment mean that you don't think it could be the tickseed?
Pennefeather...I sure hope it is! This was my tickseed last year.
Okay...True Confession Time. I bought another tickseed yesterday and tried to compare the leaves. Even by doing that, I wasn't exactly sure if it was the tickseed or a weed!
Thanks for your replies. I've been watching this thread all day long. There have been like 70 views but not many comments. I guess 'Is this a weed?' isn't really a common question, but I just knew that someone here would know!
Thanks again!
Lisa
Did you plant any Black Eyed Susan? It looks like mine when it comes up.
I did plant one Black Eyed Susan, but, it was on the other side of the Butterfly Bush.
I also bought another Black Eyed Susan yesterday when I bought the Tickseed. I don't think it's the Black Eyed Susan because it's on the wrong side of the Butterfly Bush and because the leaves on the Black Eyed Susan seem to be a little more 'fuzzy' (for lack of a better word) than whatever this is coming up.
Hmmm. Anything else you planted in the daisy/sunflower family? I only ask because that is what the leaves look like. You may have to wait until it blooms to see. Not a weed, I am pretty sure. ; )
"Not a weed, I am pretty sure. ; )"...
That's The Answer I Was Looking For!
Thanks So Much!!!!
Lisa, I have the same questions about so many plants in my garden. There is a plant identification forum available that is very helpful.
Your plant doesn't look like it is in the seedling stage so must have been there since last year as a seedling. Often garden plants self-sows and the plant sprouts wherever it falls. You may just not have noticed it last year.
I'm not familiar with weeds that grows in TN but it looks too orderly to be a weed. Also, some plants from self-sown seeds have a bit different type of leaves in shape. Gaillardias (Blanket Flower) is one such plant. I have had those come up with different shaped leaves.
I would not pull it. Wait and see what it does. Perhaps you can transplant it to another stop.
Keep us posted with a photo when it blooms. Would be interesting to see what it turns out to be.
Blomma...If it does indeed bloom I will post a picture of it.
I dont know what it is but I am sure its not a weed either.
Your thread title makes me think of a funny saying I heard once.
If you cant tell the difference between a tender plant or a weed pull it, if it comes up easy its a tender plant. =^P
Hello! I think you may have already determined this is probably not a weed! :)
I am a newbie so I am no expert. But I am from TN too and I have never seen a weed like that. Also it looks like one of my plants. I wish I could tell you what that is but at last. I do not keep up with that very well. It was a rescue plant from lowes it was in the almost dead and you can buy and take a chance section! It survived very well and came back looking like the pic you have up. It comes up with daisy like little yellow flowers. I would send a pic so you can compare, but it is raining here! :) Can't wait to see the pic when it blooms.
There's a saying that goes something like "a weed is only a plant that grows where you don't want it to"
Lars1angel....Hello Neighbor! I've bought several plants from that 'Please Save Me Bin" at Lowes! Last year, and this year too, I saved all the tags of my plants in a small photo book so I would know what I had! I even took several pictures of my garden in full bloom so I would know what was supposed to come back where. That's the only way I knew that this could possibly be the Tickseed.
Jay...Those are some beautiful plants that you posted. Only problem is I didn't have any of that planted last year. I really think it must be the tickseed...though...it has no blooms yet.
It could be your tickseed but, if it is, I want to know what you've been feeding it! The leaves look much larger than normal. Tickseed on steroids, LOL.
Lisa, wish I could help you as I have a 'Jethro Tull' but I moved it along with two other coreopsis plants last fall. I misplaced the plant labels and now don't know which is which! Like you, I have to wait until it blooms to see which one it is.
Hey back Ms no green thumb! That really should be my name!! I am so bad with keeping up with my plant names. But... I have promised myself I would do better this year. My husband just said of course you will dear! :) He thinks he is so smart. I can't wait for the weekend we should have sun.. At least in this area. I don't think Jackson is too far. Maybe you can have sunshine too! We are north of Nashville.
How far north? Our home is an hour north of Bowling Green. Might start thinking of joining us at the KYRU in September.
Wow. I am about 20 mins south of Bowling Green. That is where I go shopping. We live in a small town. Nothing really there and some parts of Nashville just isn't safe anymore. Where or what is KYRU?
Lars1angel, I sent you the link in a D-Mail. For everyone else, I believe DG members are welcome at any Round Up. They are just pot luck get togethers for the members. There are Round Up announcements in the listing of all the forums, and if you get a chance to go, you'll have a great time!
Lisa, I'm sorry about highjacking your thread.
MsRobin....I wish I were close enough to go!
Lisa, you have DMail!
Well the 'weed' or 'plant' is still growing. No blooms yet...:)
