I live in San Antonio, TX and am looking for an unusual, highly fragrant, flowering vine to grow up round colonial columns on my front porch. Thru tireless internet searching I have discovered the Corkscrew Vine and it's gorgeous!!! I have questions about it...1) Can it be planted in the ground, or is it better potted?....2) How tolerant is it of cold? We don't have much in the way of cold in S. Texas, but there can be 3-4 nights of freezing temps in the winter.....3) Will it easily go up and around a column, or is it better suited for trellis or railings?
I appreciate any info on this fascinating vine!!
Corkscrew Vine - I want them!!!
I can't tell you how well it would do in your climate since we don't know what zone you're in. However, this vine needs something to twine on. so you'd have to put something around your columns that it can wrap around.
It would be better in the ground vs. a pot since (here at least) this vine is considered very invasive and will climb up through anything around it and become a pest.
We are in Zone 9.
Should be ok...but may die back in the winter...don't know for sure.
Sometimes they die back here, but come back in the spring.
