planting bareroot plants

Sioux Falls, SD

I ordered and received several bareroot plants from Gurney's this year. They have all arrived, and are living in my refrigerator crisper. Had alot of snow since receiving. Now daytime temps in the 50's and low 60's. When can I safely plant these? Am in zone 4. Also have one plant, red prairie mallow, that I have sitting by a window, when can that go in? Alot of my perennials are popping up, but alot are not yet. Just don't want to plant too soon but like everyone else, am anxious!!
Also, I did not get my clemitis cut back this spring, (actually, never have) but was advised on here to cut back severely in spring. Looked at it last nite, several buds coming HIGH up on the brown branches on my trellis. Now what? Thanks all.

I would say if your outside temperatures are at least as warm as your fridge at NIGHT.Go ahead and plant.Make sense.People have argued about cutting back clematis for years.I have always cut mine back in the spring.Mine have buds also. This year I am thinking of NOT cutting them back to see what if any the difference is.Edge

You mentioned the day temps what about the night temps. That is what can really get them.

Night temps are in the high 30's, low 40's. And as for the clemitis, I think I will just trim off the brown leaves and stems and let her go again til next year. Did have quite a display last year of purple flowers. Thanks for input.

With the clematis it makes a difference what kind you have--some bloom on old wood so if you prune them in the spring you'll lose your flowers. If you know the name of yours, google the name plus the words pruning group and that'll give you info on when is the right time to prune them.

I would not plant until the night temps are 45 or above consistantly. Your plants are not growing in your fridge they are just sitting there. I am in zone 7b and that is the way I plant. Hope this helps.

thanks to all
