Nice pics, Victor!!!
Victor, what shrub would you suggest for under the tall white pines in my mostly shade garden? Rhodies? Viburnum? Hydrangea? Pieris? Not sure what to put there.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Kathy. Is it dry there?

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

No. I have lots of primroses, cypripediums, aquilegia canadensis, epimediums, hostas, species iris etc. I used to have this great curved willow branch (big) behind them but it's finally falling apart.

In that case, any of those will do. For shady areas, maple-leaf viburnum (V. acerifolium) is one of the best. V. dentatum will do pretty well too. For nice variegation, consider Eleutherococcus sieboldianus. It's very nice. Leucothoe is another option if the shade is not too dense.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

We've opened up the area behind the branch now-cut down saplings. So it's more exposed to the road. I'd like to fill it in with a shrub, possibly many all along this area. I am z4 for real. It gets some late afternoon light. I thought of this. http://www.bluestoneperennials.com/b/bp/AZNHP.html But I'm open to suggestions.

very pretty garden Boo

southern willamette , OR(Zone 7a)

Wow, one day away from here and it's like a week has went by for all of you. Beautiful pictures from everyone. If I commented on all of the pretty ones, my post would be three pages long!

Robin.... your daylilly bed looks as if it has a lot of potential!

Boo..... I second Allisons thoughts. Pretty gardens!

Victor... great pics! How was the trip? Why does your Koto no ito New growth look white? Mines green.

Dyane.... what is that Daff of yours that you said, up above, "looks like a cream puff"?? That's really neat looking. Then also what's the name of the pic below that one as well? I love the colors in it.

All travel pictures are wonderful Victor.
I spent the weekend nearby and toured the only White Deer herd in the world. 800 in a 10,000. acre arms storage depot.
I am suficiently recovered from planting my purchases at "Early Bird" in Ithaca.
Julie and I also went to an Amish Market outside of Interlaken and checked out their three greenhouses of annuals and perennials out side.
Perennials were fairly common and few were labled. I bought a 5" potted Artemisia $5.00
The annuals are half what theyre priced anywhere else.6packs for 2 dollars,
No annuals purchased then, learned my lesson last year.
I bought about a dozen assted 6paks because they were so cheap and had to store and tend to them for a month. Not worth it.
I did buy perennials at Early Bird Nursery.
Their 4paks were $3.00
Husker red Pensyemon
Agastache Apache Sunset
Oriental poppy mix
sedum VooDoo
Coreopsis Heliot
Coreopsis Sunny Superman

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

looks like a nice list.... and a good price... good for you

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I know thw plants are smaller but its a relief from the prices for annuals online. Just checked Mischels website and went into shock over their shipping charges.
Alas its the only way to get unusual annual varieties.
Around here there are lots of nurseries but all cary average plants. In the three nurseries I have looked at so far this year they all carry OP's but just red.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

same stuff here as well... i don't mind if they are small and healthy

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

This was my first year ordering annuals online. I will stick to the local nurseries next year. I estimate my shipping on 21 plants will be a whopper.
just checked not too bad actually $12.00

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

must be before the shipping costs went up.... not bad

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They charge depending on the number of plants bought
you can read their chart and costs. I quick looked and saw $50.00 but thet was for many more plants than I ordered. Maybe 40-70 plants or maybe 100 I dont remember.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice pics, everyone!

Laura, your Bella is cute.

Your pics are nice, too, Cousin Nut!

Sue, yes, those primula seeds do take a long time. I sowed my P. japonica seeds on 3/20 and still no germination. My digitalis and aquilegia seeds took a long time to germinate as well. Some I'm still waiting for. Oh, and the delphinium seeds take a long time. The lupines were up in a week and are going strong.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I didn't take a photo, but our first daff opened yesterday. I'm so happy. If I can get outside later today, I'll try to get a photo. I seem to have caught a spring cold from somewhere. Coughing sure takes a lot of energy!

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

It's always exciting when the first daff of the season opens.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Feel better soon Candyce! Yay for the daff!!!!!!!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Shelly, I wish I knew what the creampuff was. I bought a collection of Double Daffodils a few years back and those were included in it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Dyane they look alot like http://www.whiteflowerfarm.com/150551-product.html

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Great pics, everyone.

Victor, is that spirea the same as out front at Fairweather that was in bloom when we were there?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

And Victor, my trademark question.... "does it have a scent?"

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, that's the same one, Jan. It's not supposed to have a scent, Jen, and I don't remember it having one, but as we arrived home yesterday and were walking by it, there was a noticeable scent. I am trying to figure out what else it could have been. But I would not include scent as one of its characteristics - about the only thing missing!

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Celeste, Thanks for the link. They look very similar but they say those are late/midseason bloomers.

Rockport, ME(Zone 5b)

Oh no, great, I can't take my eyes off Calgary. Must have must have must have.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

That looks like a must have for me, too, Drumlin.

Hey, is it just me, or does anyone else ever catch themselves drooling and getting tempted by the Top Watchdog Ads, that they've been posting at the top of the page? I'm always seeing things there that I want. Not fair!

Karen

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I try to advert my eyes.

Thomaston, CT

I've been looking through the Ollalie Farm DL catalog, Drumlin, looking for some very late bloomers----I've found a few I like including 'Powder Pink'.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Robindog, I go to Olallie 3 times a season. I have a lot of the late bloomers if you want to see more pics, but not Powder Pink.

South Hamilton, MA

Don't pay any attention to the adds, have other plants to think about.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I find the adds annoying.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I almost always notice them too late, when I'm going to another screen.
I took pics of the space I'm filling in the shade garden yesterday. It's the area on the left. Then I went shopping locally and found 2 small leafed rhodies on sale.
