I bought some asparagus crowns yesterday in a rush at the store, not really examining them. Since I don't know what healthy asparagus crowns look like, I am now a bit concerned. When I bought them the cashier said "Are you sure you want these?" I wonder why she said that now.
Anyway, I planted them today, according to instructions. The roots are brown, but seem supple and tender in a way. They were really long roots. They weren't dry, but not damp either. The crowns had no green on them at all. Is that the way they are supposed to look, just brown?
So my question is, how long will it take for them to start sprouting up where I will know if they are dead or not? If they are dead, I will try to get my money back.
Thanks for your help.
Dead asparagus? help
With what the cashier said and your post I would not waste my time with those plants. Take them back and get some that you know will grow. Good luck and God bless
Sounds like I'd be taking them back too. If you wait too long to return them, they might try to say you killed them.
Crowns can be all brown at purchase. they are dormant and will push up spears when ready. Can't say if those are healthy crowns or not, but looking 'dead' could be normal.
Just a thought, have you tried to do a web search for pictures of the asparagus crowns. I would think you could find pictures of healthy and dead ones.
