Is there such a thing as a water gauge? Something I could stick in the soil at the base of a shrubbery and it would tell me how much moisture there was in the soil. Like you do with a meat thermometer which tells you the temperature of the meat . . . this would tell you the moisture content of the soil. I looked in the products section of this web site and could only find a sun gauge. If such a product exists, I would love to know where to get one. Thanks.
Water gauge
There are plenty of things like that--usually they are called "moisture meters" so I would try googling for that and you ought to turn up a ton of options. Personally I've found sticking my finger down in the soil is a better way of checking if an area needs to be watered though.
