I am a gimmick skeptic! upside down tomatoes?

Wichita, KS(Zone 6a)

Do those things really work? I think they are called Topsy Turvy or something like that.

My brother in law tried it and did not like it. It gets VERY HEAVY !!
You also need to water every day and twice in summer, it dries out fast.
Good luck have fun!!

Gimmick is a good word for it. Clever marketers made millions of dollars selling these kits over the internet, on TV, etc. The fad is already fading away. Don't waste your time and money.

yeah, I thought it sounded hokey on the commercial. I'd rather spend money on quilting fabric! I didn't say plants because our crazy weather here in Kansas keeps me guessing if the real spring will ever get here. Until it does, I'll just stay inside and sew :)

Good thinking Babee, make an upside planter yourself with a heavy duty plastic bag and see how it works..save the $$$
No spring here in MA. frigid at night!!

LOL!!! My daughter received 3 of these from her mother-in-law. No choice but to plant them. I told her also that someone is making money on these contraptions.

On the box it states "Grow tomatoes all year around" Geeze, no bees to fertilize the flowers in the winter for fruit. Not to mention they are tropical plants and require the sun and warmth that only summer can provide. What a gimmick!!!

Good Morning Blomma, try planting a 'mounded' flower in upside planter, like a begonia, easier to take in if she wants to. Frigid wind yesterday, and in the 20's last night in MA...where's our 'global warming'??

Hayward, CA(Zone 10a)

I tried it years ago with an empty kitty litter bucket. Only had a few tomatoes, it was a chore to water every day.

Rutland , MA(Zone 5b)

actually, they do work but for practically nothing you can use a 5 gallon container. just cut a hole in the bottom that is big enough to to accept the root ball of the tomato plant. stick the root ball into the hole and then fill the container with container soil. you naturally have to hang it somewhere and you better have something strong to hang it from. also, you inded need to water it twice a day in very hot weather. i container garden and i find it better just to use the containers in the conventional way which is to put some holes at the bottom or sides of the container fill it up with soil and plant your tomato plant.
