I'm starting plants inside with a grow lamp. Do the plants require darkness at times? Should I leave the grow lamp on 24/7?
Starting plants with grow lamp, Do plants need darkness?
Dan,
No--NOT 24/7!!! Once seedlings sprout, they will need lights just above their heads (2") for about 14 hrs. a day. Darkness is just as necessary as light for their life-"cycles'....
I turn my lights on for my seedlings in the AM and turn them off when i go to bed....
"critterologist" (Jill) has written many an article on growing seedlings. Find her name and then find the appropriate articles...there are MANY! Go to the Mid Atlantic Forum--she is there all the time....

This is a common question here, and the consensus is that most plants need a rest time. At certain times they take in CO2 and at other times they give off oxygen. It's tied to light and dark periods.
