Black Beauty not flowering?

Taunton, MA

Hello,

I have three elderberry black beauties and I have had them almost three now and they are growing great but they have never flowered!
They are in an area that is 50% sun and 50% shade throughout the day.

Should I move them to an area of full sun? I am thinking maybe they are getting too much shade.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

I think 50% sun ought to be fine--they're listed in Plant Files as being OK with anything from light shade up to full sun so if they're really getting sun for half the day I think that ought to be enough. You might consider waiting to see what happens this year before you move them--some plants take a little while to get going. There's a saying "first year they sleep, second year they creep, third year they leap". It was written about perennials but often holds true for shrubs too, I have tons of shrubs that haven't bloomed the first couple years I had them in the ground. Usually by year 3 they'll give me at least a few blooms, and then it'll get better from there. If you move them now, they'll need to get re-established and that could put off your blooms for another year or two. Or try moving one of them but leave the others where they are until you can figure out which area really makes them happy. The other possibility depending on how you're fertilizing them is that if they get too much nitrogen, they'll put out lots of leafy growth at the expense of blooms so if you've been giving them lots of high nitrogen fertilizer I'd back off on that and see if it helps.
