Transplant Leaf Lettuce??

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Can I transplant leaf lettuce? When I started my seeds earlier this year, we were going to container garden but then out of the goodness of DH's heart he built me a raised bed. Everything else went into the raised bed but for the lettuce. Can I transplant the leaf lettuce? It's been growing since February, and it's not very big yet. I thought I'd be enjoying fresh salad by now.

transplanting is the best way to do crisphead lettuce. Gives you a good start makes getting correct spacing much easier. It takes a while from seeds, and about two months from transplants. Mine were transplanted in early February and are just beginning to head.

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Started our lettuce (from ferry-morris I think) with individual seeds in grow trays back in November. Transplanted it to it's grow site (full sun) in early Jan. We have two types, a butter/bibb and greenleaf. I don't know how hot it's getting in NC, but all of ours started bolting a few weeks back. The greenleaf is still good eating, some of them standing at 2 feet tall. The bibb, same hight but only the very bottom leaves aren't bitter. Neither variety formed a good head, but then again this is my first attempt at growing these. We also grow swiss chard, which is doing great right about now, still great taste. Can anyone suggest how to make lettuce in the deep south form a tighter head and not bolt?
