Clematis blooms, Everyday

Here goes! Thanks to my neighbor next door. I get to see Proteus at its best! I can see mine has the same coloring, only the petals aren't quite refined as these.

General Skikoski is about to make his debute, this is my one true blue (darker blue), besides HF Young (lighter blue) that has true blue tone. Most other does favor purple to me, that include 'Multi-Blue'. That said, on my PC's screen it does look slightly purplish.

OH MY!!..lucky YOU can get the gorgeous double form of Proteus in your zone 7..that is ok hon...my so-called double form of "Proteus" is like yours...hey is your neighbors "Proteus" in more shade?..I'm just sick that one silly little zone difference can stop me from having my double..even Miquel doesn't get much doubles except on the bottom of his vines once in a while..mine are in alotta sun..hmmm...let me know about the sunlight your neighbor gets..'cause I might just squeeze one up front..LOL..it's shadier up there!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Yes, Jeanne. We're in an Island that has lots lots of big oaks, maples and other tall, tall trees. So rarely anywhere here can we find any full sun. Hers is sheltered from Oak trees so are mine. I have hope, next year mine maybe double for real? I hope so.

Backyard Jackmanii; this one is overshadowed by large sweetgums. Oh this one is climbing up a saucer magnolia.

My HF Young does not double up as much as Proteus, but the doubling is there on some of the flowers. These are from last year.

I have 6 HF Youngs. I have never had them bloom double, even tho all other double varieties do well in my garden. will say that my HF Youngs plants are only in year 2 and 3, so maybe will see some doubles this spring. if not then it may be different clones that do and don't bloom double, or some other garden variable. that said, HF young is still one of my favorites,i love it is as single bloom even though for me, it is a shorter bloom period than some other clems in my garden.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

CG, so is it safely to say that HF Young has 'sport' double on occassions? I just love learning more about certain plant's cultures. Carolyn, thanks for sharing your experience regarding your enjoyment of clems. Those are outstanding.

Delaware, OH

well, the HF youngs we buy are propagated from cuttings, so they would be referred to as clones, not sports. a sport is a seedling from a cultivar that is different than the cultivar, from naturalized, unplanned pollination.
a new cultivar results form planned pollination followed by seed germination and creation of a new variety thru that.
why some would bloom double sometimes, would be from older wood, stored energy or something similar.

that would be the extent of my speculation on this. i am glad to know about the possibility. hf young is new to me and i never even read the cotw blurb on the clem till after the double specualtion, and i saw that it does have the potential to bloom partially double.

the area where it blooms earlier, like yours, may be the climates this happens, vs my area where hf young will not bloom for approx 3 more weeks. but i do plan to reach out to some experts and will see if there is more i can find out about when it blooms semi double and why. if i learn anything i will share it of course, along with the source.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Got that lesson on 'sporting' from various plants culture. Sports derives from some seedlings, and not from cuttings hybrids clones. Thanks CG.

Look here of color capturing on the web. My Gen. Skikoski doese look purple. Since the container that I've nearby is actually purple. Am I getting colorblind? LOL

Lily_Love, I always remember my General Sikorski as blue also, but I think it's actually more purple. Mine looks like it's about to burst, but no blooms yet.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I only have a couple and they are not as prolific as everyone else's. They are still babies, and my climate is tough for them (plus, I'm not as attentive as I should be). But I got a few more blooms on Claire de Lune this year - each year a little more.

TIB, beautiful clems you've shared. Thank you.

My Nelly firsh flush of blooms is all done except one or two left standing for seedpods (I disbud the rest hoping to encourage new bloom later in the season). Then looks like Jackmanii is about to shine among this group of clematis planting. But then I've a big fat bud of some unknown coming up. See how big it's compared to the nodding buds of Jackmanii. Could be more of Ms Bateman coming along.

I believe this white blooming clematis is Henryi among climbing Blaze roses on my front yard's arbor. The abundant lovely pink 'Cecile Brunner' roses best show is about done, other climbing roses such as climbing Don Juan, climbing Peace and Climbing New Dawn are slowly taking over...

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

To the same corner, down below (from above rose/clematis combo) Multi-blue and the President clematis are partnering up with climbing pink Don Juan rose. Looks like Henryi can grow as much as 9-12 feet tall, where as these blue clematis prefer to stay at eye-level. :-)

lilly i love those two roses. very very gorgeous. they don't even need clems, but isee a clem peeking in the shot here. love those roses.
i am buying some addition al climbing roses next week, at a local source and will look for those.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Thanks CG, the last post of the 2 roses stay compact at eye-level among Earnest Markham and other clems. :-)

As far as climbing rose the post (before the last) above have mentioned of some. But JeanneTX has some gorgeous climbing roses if you'd check hers out.

Here is 'Cecile Brunner' heirlooms climbing rose. These are very floriferous and can cover large arbor in a short time. (requires some training for tidy looks, shaping down long canes) They bloom on previous year growth, so avoid pruning in the beginning of the season. One deficit; it only bloom once in early spring. That's the reason I added other climbers to keep the arbor colorful year round. :-) (Oh, zonal speakig, I can only speak for my zone 7'ish, don't know how these will perform up North).

love that one too. jeanne does have osm egreat clem and rose combos.
your roses lok so cool and clam and generous in habit. that one above is so gorgeous. i love th photo showing he red thorns and the way it drapes. nice photo.
you are in a great zone for clems and roses too!

Ellicott City, MD(Zone 7a)

Lily_love: Terrific combos of your beautiful Clems and Roses!

How do you keep your Roses free of that nasty fungal disease, Blackspot?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

So far this spring, I haven't begun my deconyl spraying program, but that's the only thing that seems to be safe to use in my butterfly garden and be effective against blackspots.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Ah, as suspected, the gigantish bud belongs to that of Ms Bateman clem. The smaller buds open up to be Nelly Moser (second wave of blooms), how do you like that? A rebloomer!
