I have an Oriental Arborvitae (platycladus orientalis) pine tree that is about 25 years old. Its leaves started getting brown, so last Fall we gave it a severe haircut. It has been getting a a lot of new growth but the new growth is also turning brown. I have placed fertilizer spikes hoping that it was lack of fertilization. The tree gets watered twice a week as its in the middle of the yard. Can any one tell me what it wrong? SL

pine trees when weather shifts from warm to cold and back like say its 70 then drops to 30 for a few days then goes back up to 70 the needles will get shocked and turn brown and die off.
my regular pines did it all last year with our crazy weather here in sc
SOLVED. Thanks for the information. SL
My tree has not gotten better since April when the temperatures in Central Florida were back to normal. I have applied a fungicide and have only been watering two days per week. The new growth comes out a beautiful green but turns brown as soon as it shows up and all I have left is a stick. I do not know what else to do --is my tree dying? I am thinking of cutting is down to about 3 feet and see what happens. Thanks for any assistance. SL
Unless your tree is in a container, recently transplanted or there is a severe drought, there is no reason to be intentionally watering a 25 year old tree. Especially if your are battling what is believed to be fungal issues. The two main causes of plant loss are under watering and over watering. Both can be equally damaging.
