hi all...
these where aquired as I.flava (top two) and I.quasiqusalis (bottom).... they look the same to me... the seeds looked like those of I.hederifolia/I.coccinea
they where a lovely purplish red colour when they first unfolded....
morning glory species 2009
these are unknown species 001... the cotyledons look very similar to I'pubescens' http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6293613 and an unknown species i call KCB http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=6293610
Colin - You've had great luck getting such sturdy looking seedlings! Congrats an your MG experience with so many different sub-species! I, too, can't wait to see them become vines, bloom, and produce seeds! Very, very nice group of MGs you've got growing! :-)
They look very healthy... how old is your Pandurata seedling? If I may ask.
I guess that question sounds a little silly, but, mine is two weeks old and has a leaf, a stem that comes out on the side of the cotyledons.. I was just wondering.
Hi gourd... i put all the seeds to the seedlings above into soak on April 1st with some others including some I obscuras.... they still haven't expand fully.
Colin - The 'horsfalliae'
http://pics.davesgarden.com/pics/ceej1963_1239084089_460.jpg
looks different than the coccinea . hederifolia...likey an I.purpurea...
The cotyledons on the right have more of a 'U' shape
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=6376212
as compared to the cotyledons on the left which have more of a 'V' shape...might be the same species...maybe not...

Colin - You have an impressive collection of wild MGs! Just amazing! Keep up the good work!!!!
I agree;D
Colin, did you get your S. maculosoi from seedsandall or did you get them from Silverhill.? I got mine from silverhill. I hope they are the same species. By now you surely have come across some one that is reckless about labeling. That really sets you up for a disappointment, when you are growing species.
I got my seeds from Thailandplants today, after a longer than usual wait. Merremia vitifolia, and Operculina turpethra.
I have had some bad luck recently, with germination, due to the use of old milled sphagnum. The package had been opened for a year now, and was contaminated.
The S. tilliafolia you shared sprouted quite well and damped off. I nearly cried. I am glad I only used 2 seeds. I have a fresh supply of the milled moss now, and can try again.
I can see why so few people bother with species. They take much longer, and that makes them more suceptable to other kinds of infections. This next run I will be certain to sterilize the seed coat, use fresh unopened milled sphagnum, and use distilled water. I just read today that even in hospitals, there can be fungus in the water supply. I will also hold back on the water since I have a tendency to get the media soggy.
I am going to try a long, warm, sterile soak, like I already should have.
You guys all have a nice easter, and I will see you again after the weekend. Frank
Hi Frank.... i got my S macalusoi from Seeds & All... off Bid or Buy South Africa... and i know what you mean about seeds not being what they're supposed to be... but never mind, it can be fun :-)
i'm having trouble germinating S tiliifolia too... only getting 1 seed out of 9 to germinate ... i can get them to swell up using a hot water soak... and then they eventually rot... i've even got them to produce radicals, but then the cotyledons rot inside the shell....
the only one that lived was a seed that arrived crushed... that just grew away without any help at all... but looks a total mess, even it's first leaves are all twisted... i'm glad i only try to germinate a couple at a time....
The S bereviensis grew away(4 out of 4) quite well with a hot water soak and placing the swollen seeds in a sealed plastic tub above a radiator and a little help getting out of their shells.... tha S macalusoi(1 out of 2) was even easier it didn't need any help at all....
i got the Operculina turpethum to germinate first time(2 out of 2), but not the M.vitifolia(0 out of 4)...... yet! :-)
let me know how you get on
Colin

Colin, it sounds like we both have approximately the same quality of a laboratory. LOL.
I am afraid of wasting seeds on methods that are unprooven, like you. The Stictocardia tiliafolia with purple flowers, from Australia, seeds that you sent me, well one germinated, the other rotted.
So now I have a fresh case of the no damp off milled sphagnum moss sitting on the floor wating for the arrival of some of that T22 stuff from Johnny's seeds to arrive, and then I wil maybe risk some of those prescious seeds again.
In the mean time I have benlated the previoust stuff that started the damping off routine using old media. YOU JUST CANNOT CUT CORNERS!!!!!!!!!!! So send me your mailing address, just in case I would like to send something to you, OK? Frank
hi Frank.... i got some living sphagnum, i use it to grow pleiones, so i'll have ago with that to see if i can stop them rooting off...
here's two I obscura seedlings... Kenya to the left and Ethiopia showing that it's cotyledons are split right down to the petioles to the right... i don't know if this is usual as i only have one of each to compare....

i can't wait for some of the flowers on these Joseph... they look so good the pics.... i bet they're much better in real life (tho' i always find the flowers to be smaller than i expect)... i will put all the flower pics up in this thread as they happen....
Colin - Great photos - ALL of them!!! Your convolvulus floridus looks just like mine. Itty, bitty plant. The Yellow blooming Chinese Evening Glory is tiny, too. But so far they are hanging in there! Fingers crossed! :-)
thanks Becky... glad to see you have the chinese evening glory going... some of mine are starting to sprout too :-))
Hi Colin - I'd like to suggest adding the cotyledons for the following to the PlantFiles ;
Merremia sibirica cotyledons that you posted here
