OMG it's a disease :O
The DG Official Chicken Hairdo Contest
This recipe has many traits that contribute to its addictiveness: It is dead easy, flexible, almost impossible to mess up, can be either extremely high calorie--or much less and still taste good, uses up eggs efficiently, requires minimal clean up and always tastes reliably great--warm or cold. And (unfortunately) you can eat a great deal of it without that "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" feeling.
Also it is very, very healthy cuz of the fruits.
And the whipped cream? It would be nice with fruit embedded in a top layer of real whipped cream.
I've read in several places that the peoples of northern Europe usually don't have problems with lactose intolerance because in order to survive in long cold winters they had to be able to utilize dairy products.
So, in an act of cholesterol defying solidarity, I am willing to eat a lot of cheese, cream, butter and flan in order to honor and preserve the high milk tolerance of my ancestors.
As a mitten clad Northerner I second that vote. Chocolate is also an essential food group BTW. If you don't eat your daily servings you will get really, really sick and probably die. I just mention that because I am very health conscious.
I would never be so rash as to risk good health by not rigorously consuming the recommended daily dietary requirement of chocolate. I am very disciplined about my health. Is it still at one pound--or has it gone up?

That's a very good question Catscan. 7-9 servings a day. I guess one serving would be a traditional sized chocolate. I like the one pound theory though just to be on the safe side because I really think death would be a bummer.
Bummer indeed. Can you imagine the existential horror of dying because you neglected to eat your chocolate?
Exactamondo! shudder
And didn't the industrial revolution start AFTER the introduction of chocolate into the Old World? Life expectancies increased as well. Some anti-chocolate factions have claimed it was due to improvements in sanitation and general nutrition...but I think any rational person can see that those were purely secondary to the healthful stimulatory effect of cocoa. Theobroma cacao---"food of the gods".
I am as honored as my awarded chickens in this contest. We are just so overwhelmed with emotion at this point and want to make sure we give thanks to all those who made this possible. First, we want to thank Claire for setting up and hosting this glamorous event and being a judge. We want to thank all those who viewed and "egged" us on and pushed us to create the best possible doos imaginable. Taking it to a new level. Wow *emotionally dabbing eyes with tissue* I am just so proud of my chickens who were both willing and unwilling (in waffles case) but they stood in there and got it done. Thank you all very much. It is an honor to be up here on this virtual stage accepting this virtual award. Thank you all! *blows kisses and gives biggest smile possible oh ya and waves the pageant wave* hehehe
By the way, DH luved the breakfast casserol! It was good. ;)
Dabbing eyes after listening to Sewincircle's emotional acceptance speech. I'm so moved...sniffle....
ZZ, Dahlianut, and Catscan have gone off the deep end into the chocolate pool. I am envious of ZZ's "blue jay" planted trees. Everybody ought to be aware that a chocolate serving size is approximately the size of an egg. If you are a bantam sized person, then use the bantam egg size serving. If you are (like me) a "standard size" (ahem) person, then use a standard egg serving.
To cause further addiction and frenzy among the members here, I present to you, my second addictive egg-using recipe....
Claire’s Addictive and Luverly Egg Custard for Individual Little Ramekin Cups
1.5 cups milk (375 mL) – you can use 2%, 1%, skim milk, goat milk, or even mix with half and half or cream!
1 cup water (250 mL)
2/3 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
4 eggs (or up to 6 if you're using up banty eggs)
Heat the milk, water and sugar until quite hot, but NOT boiling - I usually do 4 minutes in the microwave. Stir to dissolve sugar. Remove from heat and add vanilla. In a separate bowl, beat eggs well. Add a thin stream of the hot milk mixture into the eggs while whisking. (This heats up the egg mixture slowly, because if you suddenly add all the cold eggs to the hot milk, it can instantly cook the eggs and make the custard taste too eggy).
Once egg mixture has been heated by whisking, it can be poured into the milk mixture and blended well. Divide among 6 custard cups and bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes in a water bath. (I boil the kettle and pour the hot water into my glass 9x13 dish and set the custard cups in that. The water only needs to be a half inch or so up the sides of the cups). (see attached picture)
Modifications:
Sometimes I use 1/2 cup of sugar instead, to cut back on the sugar a bit. Fewer calories! I have also tried using 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup honey. Oh yum!
Sometimes I add 2 tbsp of instant coffee and blend it in the hot milk for coffee custards.
Sometimes I use almond extract instead of the vanilla extract, or amaretto, or hazelnut extract, or coconut oil, etc. Any flavor you want really...
Optionally, grate in some freshly grated nutmeg and blend, or grate on top at cooking time.
If you feel decadent, you can drizzle some maple syrup on the top of the custard before eating. It’s also nice with fresh berries, etc.
Those look beautiful.
I'll never forget the first time I cracked open my first home-raised chicken egg. I was shocked at how dark orange the yolk was. I was so used to bland yellow
We too, are honored by the award. :) I'm not as eloquent as Sew though.
I feel silly for asking, but what is a pethud tree?
Our own dear Moxon suffers from severe addiction...the "thud" is the sound of her swooning and hitting the floor when she contemplates eating the sweet, sweet nuts of the pe(replace thud with 'can') tree...
ah... OK. Thank you for the "claire"ification!
You all are a riot! LOL
I assume you would never butcher any of your chickens after playing dress up?
Not me. I cant bare it. I buy my meat. hehehe ;)
The silkies are not much meat anyway. They are banty size (small) LOL
"I assume you would never butcher any of your chickens after playing dress up?"
We dress those up as Marie Antoinette.....
Ginger
Oh Beadmom! That was too funny! Ouch!
We have not butchered any of our own chickens. I can't quite manage the idea. We bought a turkey from a local farm for Thanksgiving last November and she sat on my lap for the drive home. I was unable to eat any of it.
We bought market chicks for the 4H project one year.. Of course we bought something like 20 to make sure we had 4 to show... THey didn't make weight.....
One by one they keeled over in the yard because we didn't have the heart to do them in....

Ricky Ricardo is happy with his award and says "Good Choice"
(Modesty is not his strong suit..but brevity is...)
Ginger
LOL, with those looks he does not need to be modest. hehehe
I like dark meat, but I'm sorry, those silkies are just a lil TOO dark!
I cannot butcher my pet flock.. but I could butcher if I had a "meat" flock that I don't play with.
I butchered one roo.. It was a Marans and it was delicious! Amazingly good flavor and more dark meat than others. I didn't let it age in the fridge so it was a lil chewy.. but the flavor was great. It was NOT an easy task..
Since then, they have either been re homed or they are still here.. LOL
As for the Flan.. I think I over cooked it.. Cody ate all the middle that was not solid.. LOL
It was very very good.. will make more Flan. Thank you for the "modified" recipe Claire!
