Holly trees

Roswell, GA

I am going to be planting a Robin Holly tree as a privacy screen. Is there anything I should know about holly trees. Do they need exceptionally well-drained soil? Do they perhaps need a more acid vs. alkaline soil chemistry? If there is any information you can share, I would be very appreciative. Thanks, John in Georgia

Hi John, I have a holly tree. I am not sure if it is American Holly or Red Robin Holly. I looked up robin holly online and it looks just like mine. We did not plant it. It was here when we bought this place. I can tell you it was planted in red clay soil as were the boxwoods and the monkey grass. There was some kind of bush at each end of the house that we didn't like. We pulled up everything except the holly and they were all planted in clay soil. I have never watered or fertilized it. The only thing I do to it is cut off the lower branches to mow around it. I read to make a hedge you need to cut off the leader branch that grows straight up. This makes the bush spread out and get bushier and you want be cutting off the lower branches like I do. You will have leaves that will turn yellow and fall off. Don't think it is some kind of fungus. All evergreens shed old leaves and grow new ones. I hope this helps. Smokey

Hi, John. sounds like you'll have the same hedge as Sleeping Beauty's castle! I am not familiar with Red Robin, however, I do have a couple of remarks about holly in general. I love my huge tree, which has no pokers on the leaves, (important if you ever go barefoot in the yard), and an abundance of red berries at Xmas. Birds love 'em, too. BUT, the seedlings are as numerous as the stars in the sky, so you will be forever attempting to pluck them out. Be careful not to let them get away from you, as a mature holly is nigh on impossible to put out of it's misery.

I have never had any seedlings come up.
